In his recent visit to Iran, President Zardari have proposed the trade between the two countries to be done in local currency, he have further said that, Pakistan is already talking to China, Srilanka and Turkey over the use of local currency… if this is to be implemented in its true spirit this would be the best thing this govt.

The decision of currency swap would bring long lost prosperity of the region…

He said Pakistan and Iran faced a common menace of drug trafficking across their borders and expressed the hope that a mechanism in the form of trilateral initiative involving Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran would help counter the menace in the region. The two leaders also discussed cooperation in the energy sector with particular reference to the Iran-Pakistan (IP) gas pipeline project besides supply of power from Iran to Balochistan. Re: Best Ever Decision By Zardari - Currency Swap

After reading the title I thought Zardari decided to convert his billions into another currency :smack:

Re: Best Ever Decision By Zardari - Currency Swap

His next visits should be to India and Russia. Normal relations and trade agreements with these two countries will be quite beneficial to Pakistan.

Re: Best Ever Decision By Zardari - Currency Swap

Agree.
Pakistan get big export orders from these two big economies.

Re: Best Ever Decision By Zardari - Currency Swap

Russia is a “big economy”?

Zardari shaheed has already done enough for Pak-india economy by that transit deal that got passed recently. I am sure a million pakistani trucks are already plying to central asia through afghanistan as we speak! :hehe:

Gas pipeline to reach the border by next year!!

http://www.dawn.com/2011/07/17/gas-pipeline-to-reach-border-next-year-iran.html

**TEHRAN: President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Saturday that Tehran was hopeful of completing its section of the Pakistan-Iran gas pipeline by the end of next year.
**
“Construction of the pipeline to export Iranian gas to Pakistan is under way, and we hope it will reach the frontier by the end of 2012,” he said of the multi-billion-dollar project after a meeting with President Asif Ali Zardari.
President Zardari, who arrived in Tehran on a day-long visit, held two rounds of talks with President Ahmadinejad — first delegation-level talks and then a one-on-one meeting.
The two leaders also reviewed progress on a proposal for the transmission of electricity from Iran to Balochistan.
They expressed confidence that joint efforts would prove helpful in countering terrorism, terming the menace a common enemy for the region and the world.

Mr Ahmadinejad said his country looked forward to a new era in relations with Pakistan.
“Iran is ready to reinforce its cooperation with Pakistan in every field,” the Iranian president said.
Mr Zardari said relations between the neighbours should be strengthened, and proposed that “trade between the two countries be conducted in local currency, and not the dollar, to curb smuggling”. He also proposed a bilateral free trade agreement.
The President said Pakistan was already in negotiations with Turkey, Sri Lanka and China for the currency swap arrangement.
He denounced “efforts by our enemies who seek to show that the Pakistan government is unstable by provoking trouble,” saying that those responsible would face justice.
President Zardari praised Iran’s constructive engagement in the trilateral process, recalling last month’s Pakistan-Iran-Afghanistan summit hosted by Tehran.

He urged the Iranian government to consider the creation of an integrated border management regime for tackling militancy and extremism. He said Pakistan and Iran had vital interests in stability and peace of the region.
Mr Zardari called for developing coordination between governments to curb narcotics and human trafficking in the region. He said Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan faced a common menace of drug trafficking and expressed the hope that a trilateral initiative would help counter the curse.

The President said Pakistan and Iran had the potential to undertake joint economic projects in Afghanistan to enhance connectivity, build infrastructure, rail and road links.
Mr Zardari said there was a need to raise bilateral trade to four billion dollars from one billion dollars. He called for working together to identify impediments to implementation of the Pakistan-Iran Preferential Trade Agreement, signed in 2006.

The Iranian president agreed to take full advantage of geo-strategic locations for “ushering in a new era of progress”.
About the Afghanistan issue, President Zardari said Pakistan supported the process initiated by President Hamid Karzai for reconciliation and peace. He said Pakistan supported a reconciliation process which must be Afghan-led and Afghan-owned, adding that Islamabad was ready to provide all possible assistance to Kabul in reconstruction efforts.
It was Mr Zardari’s second visit to Iran in less than a month. He visited Tehran last month to attend the counter-terrorism summit, on the sidelines of which the two countries and Afghanistan reached an agreement to augment cooperation in the fight against militancy.

Interior Minister Rehman Malik, Water and Power Minister Syed Naveed Qamar, Petroleum Minister Dr Asim Hussain and presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar accompanied Mr Zardari.

**KHAMENEI LAMBASTS US: **Later Mr Zardari called on Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Khamenei.
Fars news agency quoted Ayatollah Khamenei as telling the President: “The principal enemy of the Pakistani people and the unity of the country is the West, headed by the United States.”
Iranian officials have been vocal in their criticism of the prolonged US troop deployment in Afghanistan and Iraq, both of which are now set to be drawn down.

im sure US ko buhat takleef hogi!!!

Re: Best Ever Decision By Zardari - Currency Swap

Those are nice decisions. And I fully agree that Pakistan needs to move away from America ... WITHOUT actually making it our enemy (can't afford).

Re: Best Ever Decision By Zardari - Currency Swap

Appears to be another impulsive move. Serious relationships can be established more silently then grand standing, unless you want to send message to another country (in this case US). In this case, Iran would do anything to spite US, but it is not in Pakistan's interest (at least not yet) to overtly antagonize US. Before jump in to a serious relationship with Iran, Pakistan need to develop people to people contacts, exchange of cultural and ohter ties etc., Going for an establishment level relationship that too with a totalatarian regime is not going to be in the long term interest.

Re: Best Ever Decision By Zardari - Currency Swap

There is simple saying, to much reading can affect the results, your post is example of the same...

The Currency Swap has been under discussion between different countries from last 10 years or more, the Petro-Dollar or Concept of US Dollar base economy would be History in year future, the world is returning to the basics as they have witnessed 4/5 crisis by depending on a single currency ( new one is just on its way) can somehow save themselves by being less dependent on the Dollars... yes it is bad news for US, but they are to blame for this, weakening economy of US cannot support the Dollar any more...

Re: Best Ever Decision By Zardari - Currency Swap

That is the point, we do not want a love-affair nor does we want confrontation, lets get our economy worked, Iran, Turkey, China and CIS can play important role, they are not Dollar Addict and they are not looking forward to it either...

Re: Best Ever Decision By Zardari - Currency Swap

That would help us in our energy needs, more what PAK-IRAN can do on the issue is to assemble a LNG facility and benefit from the huge global market of LNG..

Na sirf US ko, hamaray eak PaRosee ko bhi buhat takleef ho rahi hay

Re: Best Ever Decision By Zardari - Currency Swap

It is a good concept but I don't get the brain farts that the mullahs experience in iran about Pakistan even captured Rigi for them. This is the reason that I am wary of them and wish there was a sane & democratic govt in Iran right now.

Re: Best Ever Decision By Zardari - Currency Swap

World is not the perfect place, one need to deal with every sort of govt. to suit their interest, i don't care if the Iranian govt is run by Mullah or Priest or Rabbi, if they are elected by their voters, then that is perfectly fine by me and being immediate neighbor of Iran, i would not cut ties or stop trading with them if i don't like their govt.... Govt are not run on personal likes and dislikes...

Re: Best Ever Decision By Zardari - Currency Swap

I think Zardari's visit to Iran had to with Clinton's visit to Delhi, and the fact that she skipped Pakistan on her tour. Pakistan is kind of showing middle fig to Uncle, but the fact is we can't afford to do that. Our country is mortgaged to Uncle & we can't really afford to pi$$ them off. Not a wise move.

Re: Best Ever Decision By Zardari - Currency Swap

^^ When we didn;t made these kind of moves, we were still slapped left, right and center by US.. that is attitude of Americans, they beat the weak and if someone show them mid-fig (as u suggested) they are ready to talk and negotiate...

Re: Best Ever Decision By Zardari - Currency Swap

Good say, At least he has taken a prudent decision to strengthen the ties with neighbors.

Re: Best Ever Decision By Zardari - Currency Swap

Exactly, we have to be more practical in order to get maximum benefit diplomatically. We hv been overly dependent on S.Arabia and ignored Iran for a long time. This has helped India to be more closer to Iran in engulfing us. We need to undo our historic blunders. Iran can help us sooth Baloochistan problem and we can win Balocochi's heart by offering them more social, economical and political sops. Otherwise India is trying its best to redo 1971. and this time it can be more fatal to us and it will be very hard to digest.

Re: Best Ever Decision By Zardari - Currency Swap

**Pakistan seeks financial adviser for Iranian pipeline project

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has invited expressions of interest (EOI) from national and foreign banks for the construction of a proposed $1.2 billion pipeline to pump Iranian natural gas to the energy-starved country, government officials said on Tuesday.
**
The Inter State Gas System (ISGS), a company set up by the government to act as project manager, has set a deadline of August 20 for the submission of expression of interest (EOI) from the banks for financial advisory services, according to a document published on Tuesday.
The document did not identify the project but ISGS officials confirmed the EOI had been sought for the multi-billion Pakistan-Iran gas pipeline project.

Under the deal finalised in March last year, Iran will pump 750 million cubic feet of gas to Pakistan each day by 2014.

“ISGS is inviting EOI from reputable/international banks …to act as financial adviser to assist ISGS in arranging capital (debt and equity) for the project,” the company said in the document.
“The prospective consortia, if any, may include multiple banks along with other non-banking enterprises, but each consortium shall identify one bank as the lead adviser.”

The lead adviser would manage the entire transaction up to the financial close, it said.
Petroleum secretary Ejaz Chaudhry told a parliamentary panel on Monday that a route survey was already underway for laying the 750-km pipeline, which is estimated to cost $1.2 billion.
Iran is said to have almost completed construction of its portion of the pipeline.
The Pakistani section of the planned pipeline will cross the province of Baluchistan, where separatist militants have been targeting power and gas installations for years in a decades-long low-scale insurgency.

Despite security fears over the pipeline, analysts say the southern part of the province, through which it will pass, is less vulnerable and the plans are likely to go ahead.
Pakistan is desperate for new energy sources and needs gas to feed its power sector as it faces a shortfall of up to 5,000 megawatts per day during peak hours in summer.
It also plans to import 500 million cubic feet per day (cfd) of liquefied natural gas (LNG) by August next year. The Petroleum Ministry is evaluating 17 foreign and domestic firms that have shown interest in the project.

Pakistan’s own balance of recoverable natural gas reserves stood at 28.33 trillion cubic feet per day (mmcfd) by Jan. 1, 2010, official figures show.
The average daily gas production is 4.5 billion cubic feet, with consumption at 6.5 billion cubic feet by June 30, 2011.
