I spent the majority of the day reading a book called “Moth Smoke” by Mohsin Hamid. He’s a Pakistani writer and the book is really interesting. My sister told me she didn’t like it much, but I like it. I’m halfway done with the book and I read it every chance I got.
I learned a lot about the different classes in Pakistan and just society/life there. The book is pretty well-written, but I’m kinda lost as to what the point of the book is. I’m just getting bits and bits of information on the different characters right now, so I suppose the full story will unravel soon.
Anyways, it’s a good book and it shines light on some of the corruption that goes on in Pakistan. Read it.
So, what do you all like to do when you’re not flooding or doing work?
I don't like reading books. I always threw fits when I had to read novels for my English classes. When I am not on gupshup, I am either watching news (CNN) or doing some other outdoor activity such as mowing the lawn because I can't sit still doing nothing.
I’ve heard mixed opinions about that book. Never had a chance to read it myself…
As for me, these days, I am back to learning. No, not in school but through a job training… and I’ve started writting my daily diary that too in my own urdu
well i am working too workexperience andd when im not on GS usually talking to friends, TRYING to get into a book and listening to musiccc or going out etc
hey phatima… i read that book too. coincidentally- i was 16 back then too.
yeah..you’re gonna be lost for a very long time through the book. but the climax sets in towards the end..i guess it just talked about friendships paralleled to society. tell me what you think of it when you’re done.
when im not on gS - im a happier person than i am on here. :halo:
Honestly, i didnt like the book much. As it claims to be about diff classes & lifestyles but instead i find it about only a single class… & a class that doesnt even represent 1% of the culture/society.
I read books when i am in waiting like while flying and in airports.
other then GS I am pretty bore person, expect for a close few friends and I love Cooking for friends
I just finished the book like a few minutes ago. I really liked it, but as Jonybr said, it only covers the corruption in the elite class of Pakistan. Still, I didn't even know it was that bad. It's a sad book and I'm kind of disgusted =\
I've already chosen the next book I want to read: Kite Runner. I'm sure some of you have already heard about it. My friend told me it was the best book she's ever read, and the writing is better than that of Mohsin Hamid. =)
i read kite runner last year. its the kind of book you want to read during summer break, so good choice!
when i was reading it - i was so shocked at some points, that i went and put the book in the freezer, so i wouldnt have to see it for a while. gear up with tissue boxes - thats all im gonna tell you for now. do tell what you think of it when you’re done.
hmmmmmmmm, i need sum intellectual book choises otherwise my mind is gonna go to mush because i read chick lit and a bit of detectivy stuff thrillers and the like.
PCP - I started reading “The God of Small Things” last night. It’s kinda boring, to be honest. My sister said everything comes together at the end and it’s actually a good book. I plan on reading a chapter or two more and if I really can’t stand it, I’ll just quit. (oh btw this book is by Arundhati Roy, an Indian writer)
If anyone else knows any book by modern Pakistani/Middle-Eastern/Indian authors, please let me know. =)
