Does anyone know what the shelf-life of besan is? I had put the besan in a plastic container a long time ago, didn’t use it often, and I have a lot left. Wanted pakoras for iftari today, but I think besan might have gone bad. How can I tell? And after how long should it be thrown out?

if you're talking about dry besan (meaning you haven't mixed it with water yet) it's got a pretty long shelf life.
remember dry things don't go bad as quickly.
how long as it been in the container for? like years and years? :p

i dont think dry besan can get bad easily until it isnt mixed with water

hmm yeah it is dry besan. i would say its been there for about a year. when i open the lid, it sort of has a smell, but maybe i'm just paranoid

ahh..besan doesn't really have a smell, but what you can do is try and make some 'pulkiyaan' from the besan.
by pulkiyaan i mean the stuff you make dain pulkiyaan with - just add some salt, pepper and zeera, mix it with water until it's good - and then fry them. if they taste okay, the besan should be good to go. and if it tastes funky, then buy another bag of besan :p
but really, besan doesn't go bad - i don't think :D

Okay, it has been there for a year unused. Then I would suggest you should not use it instead buy a new packet, just to be on the safer side.

i have heard that besan can get tiny KEERE and that is when it is said BESAN TURNED BAD...and to keep the besan from getting KEERe, it is advised to keep besan in the fridge...this is what i heard several times in Pakistan..but i didn't find this happening in North America..but well, you can still keep your besan in the fridge to keep it fresh for the maximum length of time

i change mine now n then anyways just to be on the safe side...it has this smell after a while....either its besan itself or the plastic bag its in.....i dont think it goes bad...it prolly sort of stales.....just get another bag
