This past weekend Islamic Society of North America conducted its 2019 convention at Houston. One of the key speakers is Vermont Senator and Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders. Something for our fella @Southie to cheer about.
However, Bernie strongly showed his concern over Kashmir and Indian siege. Now whether you like him or no, agree with him or differ, I urge you all to watch and hear him.

I’d vote for this man in 2020 if he gets the DNC nomination.

Whether he wins primary or no but he will eventually lose not to be el Presidente. America is too capitalistic not to let any extreme socialist win. Regardless kudos to him for always taking a principle stand on issues from Kashmir to Palestine.
Just listened to the speech. Agreed with everything. Except his stance on forgiveness of debt and making college tuition free.
The He public school system in poor neighborhoods cannot compete with those in rich neighborhoods. Mass incarceration of POCs further reduce chances of affected POCs from gaining entry into college. Hence those affected POCs have already been shut off and will contribute to be shit off from college. Hence debt forgiveness will not help them. Neither will tuition free college. Hence this policy is regressive.
If if you want to help those at the bottom, take this money and give it back to poor families to spend or save. If the average is 30000 dollars per family, this will ensure the money ends up where it will have most impact. Why should tax, payers bear the burden of debt a studen has chosen to take to further his or her career. What about those who did not or could not attend college due to reasons stated?
While liberals are given the short shrift here and elsewhere, a true liberal stands for equality for all, justice for all. So yes, I support his stance on human rights in Kashmir and Israel. I support his stance on alternative lifestyles. I support his stance against Saudi Arabia. I know several here are Saudi Philes including an erstwhile heavy handed banner in chief. But I digress.
Bernie was against the Iraq war while Hillary was for it. His sincerity and honesty are to be applauded.
It was disappointing to hear the gentleman ask the crowd - are you Muslims ready to vote? I would have been equally disappointed if someone asked a crowd of Hindus or Christians the same question.
Oh the question is very valid. It was a convention for muslims lol. And his point of asking was the make sure that muslim voters stay effective and get out to VOTE. Remember a general impression is that majority of muslims prefer not to vote which is very much true.
There are 3 main political questions in American politics.
Foreign policy - expansionist militarism or peaceful isolationism
Civil rights and individual freedoms - maximum individual rights or restrict them for cultural/religious reasons.
Economics - Free-market or social welfare.
The Leftists at one end of the spectrum (Like Bernie Sanders) are defined by 1)Peaceful isolationism, 2/ Maximum rights, 3) Social welfare state
The Rightists at the other end of the spectrum are defined by 1) Militarism, 2) restricting rights for cultural/religious reason, 3) Pro-free market.
Most mainstream politicians are near the center of the spectrum - Slightly Left of center or Slightly Right of Center. Often, they end up having positions that are the worst of all worlds.
For me, there is only one political philosophy that has the best position on all 3 issues - Libertarian-ism
Peaceful foreign policy - military for defense only. No entangling foreign adventures.
Maximum respect for individual rights - maximum freedom to practice one’s way of life.
Completely pro- free market. No state involvement, either for redistribution of wealth or corporate crony welfare.
