Bengali army, Pak army; lessons

like pakistan, bangladesh experienced undiluted democracy in the 1990’s although unfortunately for our former colony, the nightmare did not end until 2007. as in pak, undiluted democracy proved to be a complete disaster for bangladesh. as in pakistan, the two main parties proved to be completely corrupt and incompetent and essentially ran the country into the ground while fighting each other kutta billee style for nearly 17 years. in the end, bangali army like pak army, had no option but to kick the politicians out. but while bangali army acted late, it is doing a much better job of cleasing the political system. tens of thousands of politicians and their cronies have been sent to jail while the leaders of the two main parties are facing lengthy jail terms.

in contrast to the actions of bangali army - an oxymoron if ever there was one - musharraf has proved to be a big khussy when dealing with politicians who are now biting him in the ass. both ns and benazir should have been thrown in jail and alternate leadership should have been developed which would now be in a position to offer leadership to the awam. instead we are now facing the prospect of being ruled once again by likes of zardari and naheed khan who will undo in 6 months, all the good work done by the government in the last 8 years. with oil at $80/barrel however, pakistan’s tolerenace for mismanagement is much lower than it was in the 1990’s. moreover with india currently sitting on $215bn of reserves, pak is already behind the 8-ball when it comes to countering india’s advantage in purchasing weapons.

sad to say but i am much less optimistic about pak than i was 6 months ago. in fact i would say that going forward, bangladesh is likely to be a better investment destination than pak will be.

Re: bangali army teaching pak army a lesson once again

OK Shah sahib, take your dollars and invest in BDesh.

BDesh is few inches above Afghanistan when it comes to economy. Their budgeted revenues are roughly 25% of Pakistan's budget and you want to make them as our "role model"? hahahahhah! Good joke!

East Pakistan used to get 45~50% of Pak budget (with no debt) and Sh. Mujib used to smell jute in Islamabad. Now poor guy is smelling his chopped up meat in a some shallow grave.

Man! tomorrow you will come to us preaching that we need to learn something from Afghan army! hahahahah!

antiobl, past does not represnt the future. pak's external position was weaker than bangladesh's when musharraf took over. that aint the case now because musharraf appointed very good economic managers who i would describe as world class. unfortunately now we face the prosepect of pak being run again as private fief of zardar/ns. in contrast, bd is being run by a technocrat.

who would you rather put your money with? zardari or world bank economist with 20 years experience?

My prayers and wishes are always there for prosperity in BDesh. I have many Bengali friends and hope nothing bad happens to their families back home.

However you can't compare a gad-awful cesspool of flood and hunger with Pakistan. Sorry if my words a bit strong. Sometimes reality has to be expressed the way it is.

You are too much into personalities, and not ready to analyze the economic engine of Pakistan.

No matter what Zardari does and doesn't, the industrialist of Karachi will keep on chugging along.

Pak budget of $30 to $50 billion is possible with very basic economic policies. And that's where we have always been.

Technocrat is a myth that we are beholden to. As a techie you can sit in your comfy office and make those wonderful power point charts. But charts do not fill stomachs, stability does.

Pak army has been tip-toeing around the whole issue of stability. Just see how China (dictatorship) and America (democracy) deal with their internal extremism. They either kill them outright or life time jail is the destination of such militants. We however catch these criminals and send them back in the society.

Let's end this catch and release shenanigans with militants.

Just like MQM militancy was crushed and Karachi improved, we must continue the process and bomb the hideouts of militants. Doesn't matter if those hideouts are in Binori town, lal masjid, or Miran shah.

BDesh has no future above their flooded sewage ponds. So let's not repeat some made up statistics.
