Benefits of Turmeric

Arthritis has always been a problem in my family…ammi suffered from it and some other family members are currently struggling with it. Recently I started to feel the stiffening and swelling in some joints so I decided to explore some natural remedies.

Apparently turmeric is a natural anti-inflammatory and has helped many people manage their arthritis problems. My bhabhi takes a 1/4 tsp every single day and swears by it.

Thought I would give it a go so looked it up to understand it better. Here’s what I’ve found:

20 Health Benefits of Turmeric

Published on October 1, 2007
The active ingredient in turmeric is curcumin. Tumeric has been used for over 2500 years in India, where it was most likely first used as a dye.

The medicinal properties of this spice have been slowly revealing themselves over the centuries. Long known for its anti-inflammatory properties, recent research has revealed that turmeric is a natural wonder, proving beneficial in the treatment of many different health conditions from cancer to Alzheimer’s disease.

Here are 20 reasons to add turmeric to your diet:

  1. It is a natural antiseptic and antibacterial agent, useful in disinfecting cuts and burns.

  2. When combined with cauliflower, it has shown to prevent prostate cancer and stop the growth of existing prostate cancer.

  3. Prevented breast cancer from spreading to the lungs in mice.

  4. May prevent melanoma and cause existing melanoma cells to commit suicide.

  5. Reduces the risk of childhood leukemia.

  6. Is a natural liver detoxifier.

  7. May prevent and slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease by removing amyloyd plaque buildup in the brain.

  8. May prevent metastases from occurring in many different forms of cancer.

  9. It is a potent natural anti-inflammatory that works as well as many anti-inflammatory drugs but without the side effects.

  10. Has shown promise in slowing the progression of multiple sclerosis in mice.

  11. Is a natural painkiller and cox-2 inhibitor.

  12. May aid in fat metabolism and help in weight management.

  13. Has long been used in Chinese medicine as a treatment for depression.

  14. Because of its anti-inflammatory properties, it is a natural treatment for arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

  15. Boosts the effects of chemo drug paclitaxel and reduces its side effects.

  16. Promising studies are underway on the effects of turmeric on pancreatic cancer.

  17. Studies are ongoing in the positive effects of turmeric on multiple myeloma.

  18. Has been shown to stop the growth of new blood vessels in tumors.

  19. Speeds up wound healing and assists in remodeling of damaged skin.

  20. May help in the treatment of psoriasis and other inflammatory skin conditions.

Turmeric can be taken in powder or pill form. It is available in pill form in most health food stores, usually in 250-500mg capsules.

Once you start using turmeric on a regular basis, it’s fun to find new ways to use it in recipes. My favorite way to use it is to add a pinch of it to egg salad. It adds a nice flavor and gives the egg salad a rich yellow hue.

Contraindications: Turmeric should not be used by people with gallstones or bile obstruction. Though turmeric is often used by pregnant women, it is important to consult with a doctor before doing so as turmeric can be a uterine stimulant.

Re: Benefits of Turmeric

Whenever I get cold , I take a cup of warm milk mixed with one table spoon of Turmeric powder and it really helps me.
Also, my mum uses it in food too, I think we Asian people use more Turmeric powder in our curries.

Re: Benefits of Turmeric

yeah…we’ve been using it in food forever
and ammi used to put a turmeric poultice if there was a bruise or ache…always worked great.
I’ve started taking a quarter teaspoon of turmeric powder every night. Let’s see what it does for me.

Here are instructions for the poultice:

Instructions
1
Mix a gram of ground turmeric with enough water to form a paste. For an extra powerful poultice, add some curcumin extract in with the turmeric. Curcumin is one of the most effective components in turmeric.

2
Mix in any other medicinal herbs you wish to use. If you are treating pain or inflammation, you may want to add capsicum or ground ginger.

3
Spread the paste between two strips of gauze. Put the gauze on the area you want to treat.

4
Cover the gauze with an elastic bandage. Depending on what part of your body you are wrapping, you may have to tape it on with medical tape.

5
Change the turmeric poultice at least once a day. Turmeric can be used safely for as long as you need it.

Re: Benefits of Turmeric

If it helps Arthritis Patient, does it help people with vitamin D deficiency too?

Re: Benefits of Turmeric

I'm not sure Lily......you might do some research.....I didn't come across anything that mentioned the treatment of Vitamin D deficiency though.

Wouldn't it just be easier to take those Vitamin D Drops?

Re: Benefits of Turmeric

Lately, I have been diagnosed with vitamin D deficiency due to weight loss plan plus we don't get much sun here. I have been on Vitamin D supplements, I don't take them regularly , just 3 times in a week as it isn't too bad.Going for the blood test next week to check if it has improved or not, they have introduced a new high strength capsules , my doc wants me to wait for the blood results first if it is really bad, he 'll give me these capsules else change my supplements. I am trying to eat food with Vitamin D e.g fish, mushrooms etc.

I will check if Turmeric powder is useful to take.

Re: Benefits of Turmeric

I've been taking the turmeric every night for over a week now and I've noticed a significant reduction in joint pain. So far I am attributing it to a reduction in inflammation as I've noticed that swelling has also gone down.

Re: Benefits of Turmeric

The fiz forces me to have haldi in milk :crying:

On a different note, mice have MS too? Trying to imagine the conversation between a mouse and his neurologist.

Re: Benefits of Turmeric

can you imagine a mouse going for a mammogram?

Re: Benefits of Turmeric

I use it daily in my food, wht ever I am cooking, even I use it as a substitute of food colour :)

Re: Benefits of Turmeric

I used to fry rice and chicken in haldi, back when I was in college and into experimenting and stuff. :sid:

Re: Benefits of Turmeric

muzna, do you just swallow the haldi with water, or mix it in something?

Re: Benefits of Turmeric

the bad part is it stains like crazy. everything from fingernails to cloth to countertops. most studies seem to think if you really need the anti-cancer benefits of haldi, you need to eat multiple spoonfuls of just plain haldi a day. not a replacement for a healthy mostly plant-based diet if you are at high risk for cancers or heart disease.

Re: Benefits of Turmeric

@khattichic -- yes, I've been placing 1/2 tsp of powder as far back as I can reach in my mouth and taking a big gulp of water over it. not exactly the most tasty treat but you get used to it eventually. in the beginning I would gag.....now I don't even notice it.....thinking about increasing the amount slowly.

@queer -- yes, it does stain....so you have to be really careful when you handle it. and yes as well to the high dose required for fighting cancer.

recently I was sick and in my laziness/fatigue I stopped taking the haldi......lo and behold the pain in my joints was back with a vengeance!

started again and after three days I'm already feeling the relief.....Ah.

Re: Benefits of Turmeric

Nice discussion above here.I am agree with this above reviews.

Re: Benefits of Turmeric

I've found an encapsulated solution for my haldi/turmeric regimen.
It's called "Curcumin". I purchased 500 mg capsules and I'm taking 1000 mg per day.
I'm not sure yet that it is as effective. I'm gonna try this for a month and then back to my regular haldi powder for a month and see which provides better results.

Re: Benefits of Turmeric

i just got a very expense shapmoo system by Aveda for thinning hair and that too contains Turmeric. Good stuff!

Re: Benefits of Turmeric

I put turmeric in practically every soup, every thing I eat but mostly they are cooked. Not bhoon to death but cooked. My fave way of using turmeric is to make a mask. Greek low fat yogurt, haldi, turmeric and lemon juice. Mix it all and apply and your skin will look fabulous. If you have oily skin use nonfat yogurt. I also will use those maggi cubes and add turmeric powder and guzzle it down. It helps so much during a cold. My mom swears by Dhoodh Haldi. Do you guys use turmeric from an Indian store or the organic kind?!?
