Most people keep blogs just to express their thoughts or as a hobby. I’m planning on having a blog with my own domain name but it will only be related to my career.
So I need some opinions on:
Will it do any good for my job applications? Like making a positive impression to the employer?

blogs as part of a total online presence can be of help in two ways
from a passive sense, meaning they don't drive some recruiter to you but you are identified as a candidate elsewhere, maybe you applied directly and as they do some background search one you they find your blog, or you have your blog listed in your resume. Now this can help because it shows you are excited about your career, engaged, thought leader etc etc.
from an active angle, if you have a blog, are engaged in the right groups in linked in, connected with right people on linkedin, engaging on twitter and are building a more prominent personal brand, that may actually serve as a trigger for recruiters to contact you.
additionally, depending on company, internal moves or moves up could be helped if you have greater visibility in your field and industry.

btw it is my view that professionals who are interacting here can support each other in the blogosphere and linkedin etc as well, provided the individuals trust one another.

Pretty much what X2 said above...
It's a core component of your overall online personal brand. For any professional whose career progress is determined by his/her expertise and thought leadership, an online blog is an important tool.
Also like X2 said, other alternatives, such as microblogging and professional social networking through LinkedIn can help too.
