Benazir thanks Nawaz for gesture of solidarity
By Mayed Ali
LAHORE: PPP Chairperson Benazir Bhutto has thanked PML-N Quaid Mian Nawaz Sharif for withdrawing his nomination against two National Assembly seats from Lahore as mark of solidarity with her, The News has learnt.
In a 20-minute long telephonic conversation with Mian Nawaz Sharif on Saturday, Benazir expressed a desire that Nawaz should have contested the elections. “Had you won, it would have been the victory of democracy,” she said.
Reciprocating her sentiments, Nawaz said: “You are like my sister. Let us forget what happened in the past. Inshallah soon we will both be in Pakistan.” In response, Bhutto said, “We will not accept the military government. Let’s work together for a democratic and prosperous Pakistan.”
Both the leaders discussed the political scenario in the country with special emphasis on the possible electoral adjustments. Against the backdrop of recent developments, the sources say, there are strong chances of the PML-N-PPPP cooperation in the October elections. Sources in both the parties believe the seat-to-seat adjustment might go beyond the already discussed areas. So far, both the parties are poised to enter into the said adjustment in areas where the turncoats of both the parties are contesting.
The sources also revealed the Sharifs had reciprocated Ms Bhutto’s gesture of expressing happiness over Shahbaz Sharif’s possible return to Pakistan in an interview with a satellite channel. Ms Bhutto had also said the exiled political leaders should also be allowed to come back. It is learnt the Sharifs hold similar views on Bhutto’s return. Sources close to family say the Sharifs have a strong resolve of letting Ms Bhutto back to Pakistan in case the PML-N comes to power.
