Benazir still seeking deal with Musharraf - sets August deadline

Having practically burnt her bridges with Nawaz Sharif, who has instead jumped in bed with the mullahs and playboys, BB seems pretty desperate to get a deal done with Musharraf.

Benazir sets deadline

Islamabad, July 25: Former Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto’s Pakistan People’s Party has set President Gen. Pervez Musharraf an August deadline to finalise a deal or the PPP will no longer be interested in any power-sharing formula, informed sources said. “After August, the PPP will look at other alternatives. They know the elections will be too close then to waste any more time on the deal issue,” an aide close to the PPP leadership told this newspaper. Elections in Pakistan are scheduled to be held by the end of this year. On Tuesday, Ms Bhutto had said the United States and the United Kingdom have offered to support her comeback to power politics. A few days before that, Ms Bhutto had said she was set to return to Pakistan as early as September 2007. Ms Bhutto, twice elected Prime Minister of Pakistan, in 1988 and 1993, saw her government sacked twice by the then Presidents on corruption charges. Ms Bhutto said she was now sceptical about striking a deal before the general elections: “There are now three months left for the elections so,unless the regime acts rapidly, it seems unlikely that there’s going to be any agreement.”

The aide, who is privy to developments in the PPP-government talks, said the PPP has told the negotiators of the Establishment that the time for elections is drawing closer and the PPP is awaiting a response on the progress on its demands for a deal with President Musharraf on a power-sharing formula following the polls. PPP negotiators Makhdoom Amin Fahim and Rehman Malik, and the Pakistan government team, comprising Mr Tariq Aziz Warraich and a senior military officer, had reviewed demands by both sides for a deal in Dubai a few months ago. The PPP team demanded a reversal of the constitutional amendment that bars a Prime Minister from running for the premiership a third time, a level playing field for the PPP in the elections, and a President not in uniform. The PPP negotiators assured the Establishment team that they would help President Musharraf in an indirect way by boycotting the National Assembly session on the day of his controversial re-election from the incumbent Assemblies and that the National Security Council (NSC) currently headed by Gen. Musharraf would remain in his control. “If a deal between the PPP and the Establishment is not finalised, the PPP can opt for an anti-government drive, but the PPP will not stay away from the polls,” the PPP source said.
