Benazir says Musharraf's present Presidential term expires on Dec 31 2008 - not 2007

The part about her returning to Pakistan she has been saying for the last 8 years. But what is significant is how she and her party have been saying for a few months now, that Musharraf’s present Presidential term expires on 31 Dec 2008 - (not November 16 2007), before he can seek re-election. This is based on the reading that as he received a “vote of confidence” from the electoral college (NA, Senate & 4 PA’s) on 1 Jan 2004, his 5 year constitutional term actually began on that day.

Is this interpretation a costitutional face saver for both sides (PPP-P and Govt) to finally stitching up a deal?

interesting…I’d root for liberals…but not those who r too liberal with the treasury :chai:

^
The likes of Nawaz Sharif who in no ways is liberal, ended up being more liberal with the treasury (FCA's etc) than any liberal or other ruler before him or after.

Re: Benazir says Musharraf's present Presidential term expires on Dec 31 2008 - not 2

Well, it is all excuses. Referendum happened in 2002, not 2004. Assemblies came to existence at the end of 2002 after referendum and endorsed Musharraf as President in October 2002. Thus, presidential election is due in 2007 (between mid Sept 2007 and mid Nov 2007).

If opposition thinks that next election would be rigged, then why they worry about presidential election happening before or after next election?

They should be certain that if election would be rigged, they would have lesser seats in Assembly after next election then what they have now.

Fact is that, most likely they would lose the next election badly and thus making excuses that next election would be rigged. As for presidential election, they are thinking that to pressurise President, so that they get some deal with President before next election.

BB-Mushy deal seems to be in final stages.

^ Just like how the Altaf-Mushy deal was in its final stages. Its good, Altaf was recently quoted as saying that the whole judiciary debacle was a legal/constiutional issue lol...

The opposition parties took part in the last general election in Oct 2002, and despite the repeated resignation threats over the last 4 plus years, they will take part in the next elections as well. It would be disastrous for them if they did not.

Altaf bhai is so unpredictable, one can never tell the why’s and when’s with him. Most of the time he’s just playing to the gallery so best just to ignore him.

Which problem did Altaf have this time?, the drama queen.

Anyhow, this thread is about BB and her new found love of the Generals.
