BEING SELF-AWARENESS and REASONING?

in order for a person to be one’s own self and not be a made up and phony existence, there is a degree of self awareness that everyone must have for personal growth and to be able to establish credibility in regards to having any amonut of interaction with others.

once, a person is aware of ownself, then appearing reasonable and able to reason with sound reasoning will make a proper impact about one’s own actions and reactions to many things around oneself.

that said, what is sefl awareness to you and what does do you believe that having a very clear idea of one’s self, is necessary?

share your thoughts on this, if you like.

Re: BEING SELF-AWARENESS and REASONING?

Just like there is truth and perception of truth about everything else, there is truth and perception about ourselves.

For example a person consists of many aspect: appearance, health, physique, knowledge, skills, attitude etc.

For each of these, truth and perception exist. For example, Mr.X may look ugly but he himself may think he is handsome.

Not being aware (correctly) of ones own strengths and weaknesses will obviously lead to erroneous actions in turn leading to mission failure.

Self awareness is however not only about the factors mentioned above but also about the inter-relationship of each of these factors with the environment. This is key because many of these factors are relative. What is more, these are all causes and effects inturn!

One's perception of oneself, absolutely as well as in relation to environment determines one's assessment of situations and how they act. The perception, the assessment, the action - they all can be correct or incorrect. If one is not correctly aware of self, obviously the maya (perception) will drive the action.

Knowledge of one's Dharmic responsibilities (personal and circumstantial responsibilities, duties) and understanding of Karmic sequence (cause effect relationships, chain of action - result - reaction - consequence - action - .... ) leads to piercing the maya (perceptions) to arrive at correct action (thus driving the chain the right way!)

Reasoning of-course is the process of (and attempt to) understanding the non-obvious, the givens and separating the self-evident from cause-effects. As one matures in self awareness, the number of givens will diminish (as one sees the reason behind and causes of more and more things that we previously beheld as givens!)

May be that process in its extreme leads to the Ultimate Truth!

Re: BEING SELF-AWARENESS and REASONING?

stircrasy, good points.
besides some of the typos, what i queried is very much due to what you have said. the inner relationship of all the qualities that make up a person's who being leads to a certain self awareness that nonone can negate.
values and ethics come first.
memories become a part of a person who is integral. and one does not disown the hardships, as well as lessons that one got, only if a person is self aware. introspection without getting blinded with self doubt or self agg*****zement or self pity, with a balance of the right and wrong is necessary.
that translates to relationships and the value we place in what we say to otrhers - anybody and how we hold fast to what we say.

it is sad that people lose their space and do so delibrately.
when they dont hold the status of credibility with honor. and i feel that is crucial to keep, and can be enabled when one is self aware and then reasons.

^^
The word self awareness ,normally read as one word, is a combination of two very important psychological concepts. It is imperative to understand both the words separately before talking about it generally and , specially, if seen in the light of a very contextual exordium in your question.

To be self aware one has to be aware of “self”, what is self?,To a degree, the conception of “self” starts with the conception of “life” itself, but for intelligent beings it doesn’t stop there. There is a huge separation of the perception of universe when seen with the eyes of an intelligent being like human or with the eyes of an animal. Self is a core, centre of the personality, personality that includes both conscious and unconscious, to many psychologists the goal of development of self is not hidden in its perfection, rather in wholeness and in balance, which is why the symbol for self is “mandala”.

Like I said before, self is the centre of personality, a personality that includes both conscious and unconscious characteristics. Ego is the centre of the consciousness, delineated by one or two dominant attitude or functions.
“Personal Unconscious” is another very strong characteristic of “self”, it is directly in conflict with the ego. This can be attributed to an individual’s personal mental trash can. The personal Unconscious is a construct of mental taboo, which one can not socially share with other within the norms of decency.

Two other very interesting constructs of self are “shadow” and “persona”. Shadow is considered a dark side of your personality, an animal instinct that every one of us carry, it is somewhat seen in the symbolic representation of devil and daemons. A slip of tongue, by Dr Jung, is the language of our shadow, we demonstrate the existence of a shadow in our dreams and fantasies, in anger or when under the influence of drugs. Suppression of a shadow is a key to a socially acceptable personality but at the same time at the expense of creativity, and strong emotional display.
Your query is about yet another construct of a personality, called “persona”, it is what we project ourselves to be , a socially acceptable mask that we all wear, we may change our appearance and mask with the perception of the audience that we are facing, but never the less persona is conscious representation of the personality. It is an opposite to “shadow” because it accepts all the appropriate compromises that one has to make to live in a society, thus making “persona” a “social archetype”. Now the question arises, what is our true self, the shadow or the persona?.

How can we be “aware” of our own self, the phony existence may just be a mask that is not acceptable to the society or for that matter to an individual, yet it might be a very strong trait of personality wholeness. Does it mean that credibility of a person is conditioned with his acceptability within the norms of social acceptability, what if the whole fabric of society is upside down, what if a person is truthful in a society where truth is detested, has that person lost every chance of “growth”

Duswari, I wonder do we judge people by our own “persona” or by the collective norms of social acceptability?. what drives us, religion or social pressure to be civic?. I do understand the necessity of “self awareness” but what if it is revealed upon you that you are not the one who can be reason with, does it force you to damage your “whole self” to be acceptable?

Re: BEING SELF-AWARENESS and REASONING?

intelliphant,
something that i just said to somebody.
no,. we ought to judge others by our own standards but by the morally correct and right standards for all.
and if something is greater than simply being one way or another, that is owning up to the fact, and not hiding the real intents.
our deeds need to be transparent from the beginning to the end.
only then, we can have a self awareness. there is phony existence, no doubt about it.
but it can be at least brought closer to perfection in becoming unphony.
and that is something between the person and the self.
thanks for your shared thoughts.
perona and shadow is a good alluded conception each.
but, the core values never shift.
people who have open and not closed minds, are the ones who embrace the good and the bad and then show an ability to set right what has been unintentionally or intentionally been done wrong.
and the qs. what is our true self?
each to own!
it relies on how tuthful one to oneself.
and by token, how truthful one is to others.
there is no room for the flakyness of 'i was or am influenced by others'.
ideally, any adult human being must be able to do the right things out fo own accord and uphold them liksewise, not be forced to do so, nor stopped from doing so.
that is my observation and humble personal opinion. i feel that it can work and does work when utilized in the right way to interact and socialize.
