Not exactly my idea, but i read it somewhere on the net, intresting thought i must say.
Being realistic is rather lack of emotions, feelings. It is our rational analysis, mathemetical calculations of facts & figures known to us & making decisions on probabilities. There infact, is no such thing as realsm, it is just our calculated guess about the future.
Its not being optimistic but rather pessimistic. As they say, nothing great have been done, without a passion and being realistic, simply kills that.
There are many approaches to life. People are optimists, dreamers, emotion driven......on the other hand there are people who are pessimists, realists and logic driven.
I myself belong to the latter, and somehow I feel that the latter way has more chance of being able to stand up in this world without being overridden by others.
It's just a matter of which surviving-skills one uses
of course having a passion is an instinct for survival. The trick si to be able to balance it with realism. Going blindly after ur passion can have adverse effects.
As i said there are many approaches to life..and i think -like in many aspets of life- it's best to find a balance between the two extremes, and that is most difficult to do. It can take u a lifetime before u reach that balance and then it's often too late

I think they are opposites, but as such they need not be mutually exclusive. And to realize this and being able to combine the two opposites, that is the whole 'trick'
