Re: Being poor in Pakistan…
Jokes aside, those people who claimed the above in face of Indian poverty were booted out of power. Who is going to do that to your rulers?

Re: Being poor in Pakistan...
^ Unfortunately Talwar we are one up on you guys i this case..Sab Acha Hai is literally the mantra of every Pakistani ruler (that and how all the screw ups are the fault of the previous government)
A few quick questions about poverty distribution in India and the Army in India if you could add to this conversation.. one is ..is it fair to say the Hindi Belt dominates Indian politics the same way the Punjab belt does in Pakistan? Also It appears to me.. from what I've seen that the reverse poverty ratio applies to India..as the Southern states are far wealthier than the populous Northern ones? Finally which groups dominate the Indian Military ( a friend said Punjabis are a small but disproportionate percentage of the Indian army?)
Re: Being poor in Pakistan…
India is shining .. is a triple whammy..poverty was wiped out in 10 years of software exports..Bihar is the model of good governance etc etc etc
Re: Being poor in Pakistan...
^ how dare you argue Allah's special dispensations haven't worked!
Re: Being poor in Pakistan…
Yes, but not as much as it used to be in the 60s and 70s. Then, congress used to win by default in the South as people still remembered independence struggle leaders. There was a feeling of Hindi belt domination especially when Southern leaders would always bow down to diktats from Congress HQ in New Delhi. That led to riots and a political change.
Today in the South, you have regional groups that dominate the states and one or another usually wins big majority. For any government to come to power in New Delhi, it needs coalition with Southern parties. So they have to give them BIG representation in the power structure or they vote you out.
The NDA had Telugu Desam party as its main partner. The current UPA coalition has the DMK party from Tamil Nadu etc. These guys have key ministries as well.
Yes. This is because Southern states took faster action on literacy and population growth. But its all relative, India is still pretty poor.
In the army when you talk of jawans - Punjabis are #1 - both Sikhs and Hindus, mostly Jats. And yes they occupy a dispoportionate %. You then have Rajputs from the Hindi belt from Rajasthan to Bihar. Then you have Gorkhas who comprise 7 out of 27 Infantry regiments and many companies in other regiments in the Indian Army. After that you have people from other places like Ladakhis, Nagas, Dogras, Paharis, Marathis, Assamese etc. The officer cadre comes from all over and we have had many South Indian and Bengali Brahmins lead the IA!
Re: Being poor in Pakistan…
I have close links to skp, have some land there too, skp has no Garison of army, not famous for its people in army.
only think I can agree with having huge industry , ICI Pakistan, Rupali Polyster, Milkpak/Nestle, Ravi ryon, Itehad chemicals, Kohinoor Mills, Munnoo Textiles, Pak Arab refinery units, Atlas Honda, Panther Tyres, Olympia Carpets, Punjab Steels, Toyo Nasic Glass, Dawood Hercules chemicals and many more
it has good agri land, produces best basmati rice in world. two motorways pass through it M2 and M3
but i strongly disagree for Human index records aboud education and Health. it hasnt got a single uni, some colleges and basic schools are there though.
for health it heavily rely on Lahore.
emplyment rate may be higher cause of industry. but HDI figures is based on education and health then these are not correct.
Re: Being poor in Pakistan...
Can someone please open a different thread to discuss feasible ways to reduce poverty?
And by feasible I mean, I wouldn't mind cutting the defense budget in half and putting all this money in schools and universities and giving tax breaks to businesses to start manufacturing jobs. But I doubt it is possible.
Re: Being poor in Pakistan...
Interesting info ..thanks Talwar and Shak (I stand corrected Shak as far SHP)
Talwar it sounds like although things are changing ..the basic structure of both Pakistan and India's Armed forces are still influenced by the same recruiting patterns as they were during the British Raj ( the whole martial races theory..which when discussed annoys me considerably)..if an Indian guppie has any similar links on poverty to district uni levels in India I'd be interested to see which areas do best and worst as a comparison..I am also curious to know how are taxation powers or revenues distributed in India between Central Government and the States..
AJ: Poverty alleviation (if we start talking in an ideal world) involves the bulk of all funding going towards front line poverty alleviation..meaning expenditure being spent locally by local stake holders...at a federal level the key criteria for investing in projects should be poverty alleviation...personally I think issues of poverty alleviation in South Asian seem to go out of the window whenever economies start doing well..the vaunted trickle down effect is always mentioned..
