being polite and respectful to
others requires considering their feelings above one’s own?
or is it situational?
Re: being polite and respectful to others requires...
yes it requires more than that .. you have to tolerate their stupid opinions about your ownself which they have once they are forgiven

Re: being polite and respectful to others requires...
requires:
- patience, tolerance
- knowledge of the fact that nobody is perfect, and a person himself/herself could be wrong sometimes.
knowledge of the fact that respect is always two-way.
and a muslim should remember the hadith that "the best among you is the one who has best manners (akhlaq)".
and another hadith that "meethi baat bhi sadaqah hai" (nice talk is sadaqah).
and a quote (probably from Hazrat Ali) that "the brave is the one who controls his anger".
-^ in short, more knowledge also makes one polite.
...... baqi kal ke khabarnamey mein :D
Re: being polite and respectful to others requires...

Re: being polite and respectful to others requires...
I think it requires from us to consider others as human as we consider ourselves.
Secondly to give others genuine respect, one should maintain his/her own respect, someone who himslef feels dis-respected often finds it difficult to give politeness to others. But thats not the sole reason for such attitute.
The other reason which i found in many people, is being insensitive to the feelings of others.
