yes it requires more than that .. you have to tolerate their stupid opinions about your ownself which they have once they are forgiven

requires:

  • patience, tolerance
  • knowledge of the fact that nobody is perfect, and a person himself/herself could be wrong sometimes.

  • knowledge of the fact that respect is always two-way.

  • and a muslim should remember the hadith that "the best among you is the one who has best manners (akhlaq)".

  • and another hadith that "meethi baat bhi sadaqah hai" (nice talk is sadaqah).

  • and a quote (probably from Hazrat Ali) that "the brave is the one who controls his anger".
    -^ in short, more knowledge also makes one polite.

I think it requires from us to consider others as human as we consider ourselves.

Secondly to give others genuine respect, one should maintain his/her own respect, someone who himslef feels dis-respected often finds it difficult to give politeness to others. But thats not the sole reason for such attitute.

The other reason which i found in many people, is being insensitive to the feelings of others.
