…is this a real reason for not getting/offering a job or do they really mean:
a) we made it sound glam in the ad, but really it’s a dead end job with no prospects and cr@p pay and you’d get depressed.
b) as above and you would probably get bored and leave and then I’d have to go all this interviewing rigmarole again.
c) we can’t afford to pay you the salary you could get elsewhere
d) I see all the qualifications but where is the experience ? A bit of a perpetual student aren’t you ?
e) all this job needs is a bit of common sense, an intelligent monkey could do it.
f) I’m not employing you cos I feel intellectually inferior and you’d be after my job.
g) we’ve had people in here who think they know everything cos they have enough certificates to paper the staff loo but half the time they couldn’t tell one end of a screwdriver from the other
Since interviewing can often cost thousands (from the drug tests, credit checks, background checks to training how to flip burgers and salt fries and so on), its not worth if you got tired after a day and decided been a Walmart/ASDA employee is better :)
Seriously speaking... getting an employment is a two-way street. The employee provides his services and the employer provides compensation. Both sides have to be getting a fair deal for this relationship to work. If the employer feels from the get-go (initial interview) that the employee is not happy (or will not be happy) in the role and will move out to another employer at the first available opportunity, there is no point in going through the hassle.
Internship is less fussy... but proper employment should be offered only when there is a reasonable chance that the person is going to stick around.
Over-qualified people may accept the job at that time for what ever reason, but they are unlikely to stick around. There are always exceptions, ofcourse.

In most western nations for foreign nationals the issue of visas and immigration tends to play a big role for over qualified people taking on such positions.
