Re: Being humble at work

LK, you can always network to help people, or to meet like minded people, or peers (not Pirs but peers) in simialr roles and/or similar industries where you guys can share best practices, information etc. This can be internal i.e. within an organization or external.

how is meeting the right people to “get” something selfish, meet people because you want to and because you can learn from them and because they could be good company. in any case you are getting something out of the interaction, why consider work related socuializing as selfish?

and let me tell you that most people will not reciprocate if they dont think you can be helpful or that you are just a user. I have ditched people who somehow appear only when they need something. Know this one clown from my citicorp days who would disappear for years and then show up all of a sudden because he will need somthing.

Its like the question.. in a mentoring relationship, the mentee is getting advice, a more experienced perspective etc etc, what does the mentor get? do you think the the mentor does not also get the benefit of a fresh viewpoint?

Re: Being humble at work

Yeah I get that Fraudz...but somehow I seem to come across more of em jokers you knew at citicorp,,,else professional relationships are wonderful...

It's the I use you and you use me thing I hate..learn and giving advice is superb.

Re: Being humble at work

Networking works when you have assets that can be leveraged to create value and experience in leveraging those assets. otherwise, it is a bunch of monkeys sitting around in a circle jerk.

Re: Being humble at work

not that there is anything wrong with a bunch of monkeys sitting around in a circle jerk...

Re: Being humble at work

I hardly see any truth in that. The current cut-throat atmosphere in the corporate environment does not appreciate humbleness. As someone already mentioned, it is considered as a sign of lack of confidence and non-aggressive attitude.

Being humble is not going to take you any where. You might just be considered a good worker and thats about all. You will not be considered the management material.

Re: Being humble at work

WDr, there was a segment on TV recently where they talked about 'nice guys don't get paid'... paid as handsomely as their rude and aggressive counterparts.

I guess the sweet spot lies in being humble from the inside and a little aggressive on the outside. The real danger is when you start feeling you are better than everybody else. Then there is no room for improvement.

Re: Being humble at work

I wouldn't be a kiss ass. It is not only immoral but Indians(mainly Hindus) engage in this horrible practice.

Don't be like the Hindus.

Re: Being humble at work

funguy... :) even that pays off if you can convince everyone around you that you are better...

Re: Being humble at work

Interesting thread. People hate me at work, but whenever they run into a roadblock(be it political, technical or a business process) they all want me to come bail them out.
P.S Just to add ppl on this forum hate me too but it's ok I love them all just like PD.
