Beijing has been awarded the 2008 Olympics after the International Olympic Committee voted to take the Games to the world’s most populous country for the first time.
The Chinese capital, which lost out by just two votes to Sydney in the race to stage the 2000 Games, defeated Paris, Toronto, Istanbul and Osaka.
It's a sad day for the thousands of Chinese arrested, persecuted and even killed for their beliefs - not to mention those suffering under Chinese occupation in Tibet.
Its another example of the power of capitalism as companies such as Nike attempt to open up the Chinese market. Was there really anything else in this bid? No.
Hitler used the Olympics to advertise fascism during the Berlin games in 1936. Look what he went on to do. There is no clause if China does not resolve her abysmal human rights record (the worst in the world).
It is worrying when capitalist pursuits are considered more significant than human rights.
If it was your mother or father who were killed for their beliefs would you still argue that sport should remain out of politics? And would China still be so deserving?
It is a sickening decision made by the IOC and a sad day for the olympic tradition.
All those arguments were made against Beijing when they lost 2000 bid by just two votes. Its time politics are kept separate from sports. This decision should be taken in the context of which country is prepared to host Olympics and its sporting prowess and the enthusiaism of its residents to host it. These factors were overlooked when the 2000 Olympics were announced and China was denied purely on political grounds. IOC just made amends to that lousy policy.
Kicking 1.3 billion people of China again and again for Tianmenn '89, will only strengthen their resolve to shun outside world intereference. Giving them Olympics will atleast allow them to be drawn more into the world community.
Toronto had technically the strongest bid, and everyone knows it.
If it was your mother or father who were killed for their beliefs would you still argue that sport should remain out of politics? And would China still be so deserving?
Moscow got Olympics in 1980. If you want to discuss world politics and China's human rights, go to World Affairs. You are just mixing apples with oranges here.

Surely you are not attributing the collapse of Communism to the Moscow games of 1980?
Whilst my arugment has been heard before, so has yours. What did giving Hitler the Berlin games achieve? Should we give Saddam the games in 2012, on your line of argument it would 'open Iraq more to the world community.'
Politics and sport are intertwined, stop being idealistic and thinking they're not.
