What does it actually mean to act like a Desi? And what is something a Desi wouldn’t do or if caught doing would be considered a non-Desi?
Re: Behave like a Desi
pick a nose, oogling (desis get more blame though) etc.
Re: Behave like a Desi
Anyone who is conscious of being a desi is a desi who can be spotted from a mile away...
Their actions are very self conscious...Forced smiles, forced accents, forced trying to fit in...
The guy who is relaxed and at ease would be considered a non-desi...
Re: Behave like a Desi
So far to act like a desi you should do the following things:
- Nose picking
- Ogling at the opposite sex.
- Forced smiles
- Accent
Please add on ...
Re: Behave like a Desi
desi talking loud in a mall or in any store.
Re: Behave like a Desi

Re: Behave like a Desi
People might be branded desis if they:
-have a curry-like odor emanating from their breath, body, home, cubicle, car and blah blah.
-perform occasional conversatory head toss like an excited owl (a wierd tilted sideway looping motion)
-are fanatical cricket followers, may even play the game during summer evenings or weekends in an empty lot or an unused soccer field (this might just apply to guys)
-buy all house furniture from Ikea.
-prefer Korean/Chinese grocery stores over regular grocery stores.
Something uncharacteristic of a desi:
-Hops onto weekend parties where guest lists don't include relatives or other desi couply friends and their relatives.
-Switches on a Country music station and starts singing along.
-Treats other minorities equally.
-Dreams of either palm beaches or an Irish remote mountain village when thinking of retirement.
Re: Behave like a Desi
you know you are desi when:
You get your V's and W's mixed
You have too many degchis (huge saucepans) in the house
When you cook, you neighborhood KNOWS you are cooking
you have cockroaches in your house
You bleach your sideburns, thread your brows, highlight your hair ten shades lighter than your haircolor, wear flared jeans most of the time with high platform heels
you think you can get away with green/blue eye contacts on medium skin.
you shop at walmart kmart or the 99 cent store
you own or know someone who owns a 7-11, dunkin donut/ subway
you dont see the need to use deodorant when you shower
you stare without realizing that you are staring.
Re: Behave like a Desi
you try your best to be perfect in constructing English sentences, but find that no matter how hard you try.. there's always one or two mistakes. and then beat yourself about: "I must read more novels. Only then can I be an orator also. I must read more novels. Only then can I be an orator also."
Re: Behave like a Desi
This is hilarious.
The key is you dont do any of these with intentions- it just happens....
Re: Behave like a Desi
^ my dear, notwithstanding the lack of intending behind these things, one can at least not be too conscious.
Re: Behave like a Desi
Ok, they are also some positive ones too, don't concentrate on only the negative ones. For example, desi people are respectful to elders, they are also hospitable etc.
Re: Behave like a Desi
Desis know how to celebrate and have fun (i.e. wedding customs).
Re: Behave like a Desi
Would it be safe to say that Desi food is generally more enjoyable and worthwhile because of the considerable effort and time spent on its preparation?
Re: Behave like a Desi
That’s mostly only true for Bangladeshis and some Indians.
I hate it, they even come to Friday Prayer smelling of masaala, like please brother get an extractor fan installed in ur kitchen and don’t go in the kitchen when mrs is making haandi if you’re going to stand next to me in prayer. :yukh:
Re: Behave like a Desi
Desis also tend to eat a lot more rice.
They often have distictive hair styles.
They also get emotional too soon.
Their social functions are never organized.
Re: Behave like a Desi
Depends what it is!
I eat my mom’s cooked bread but the pita breads with that funny smell → :yukh: :yukh: :yukh: :yukh: :yukh:
In that case, rice for me! ![]()
