Beggers?? or needy??

Today, I stopped my car at a traffic light, a very young rickshaw driver stopped next to me and tried talking to me, i turned my window down a little bit to listen. He was saying that he has 250rs only and his mom recently had a surgery and he badly needs money.
Thinking he has a way of earning i said NO. and he started crying badly!!! I gave him 500 and left.

The other day a guy came into office selling lunch boxes, i took his pamphlet and told him since i had my lunch already i will try him next time. He started begging that please buy one i am a very needy person, i need money badly. I was like, WTF!! anyway, i bought one, which later i gave to the building guard. But i never ordered from him again.

There is a boy who sells news paper on roads, i normally give him 50, sometimes 100, on daily basis, once he asked me please give me 500 i need to pay my tuition fee, and was so badly disappointed that i stopped buying news paper from him.

Last week, An elderly man came into office with a small letter written for him by someone, saying he is a needy person, and please help him. I was a bit pissed off so i said NO, he left immediately, seeing he didn;t bother me much, and might really be a needy person, i felt bad and chased after him to hand him some money.

I just wonder are these people really needy or is this a new way of begging?? Does it happen to other people as well?

Situations like these disturb me badly, sometimes for days. Like this one that happened today is badly disturbing me, whether he was a really needy person, if yes, maybe i cud have done more for him, or he wasn;t and it;s just a new way of begging? I am a foriegner, a girl, i can;t just walk with anyone asking them to show me how needy you are so i can help you better.

How you find out who is needy who is professional?? on roads i normally give money to handicapped only. But in situations like these, it;s really hard to find out whether a person is needy or seeing you a foreigner taking advantage of you.

What you people will do in situations like these??

Re: Beggers?? or needy??

they do take advantage of us....and it's soooo difficult to know who is needy, rule of thumb a genuine needy person will not be out on the streets ,handicaps in pakistan are usually that way because their pimp has chopped off their limb...so dont help them, it encourages them to kidnap another small child and the whole circle starts again...

try to find a few families whom you think are deserving and help them on a regular basis, they could belong to a well to do family or white collar job or labour class, that way you are helping genuine needy ppl who would otherwise have no help...and you won't feel so guilty nxt time at the traffic lights...

but yes I too find nowadays everyone is asking(begging) for money.....
Never give money to beggars it only goes to the pimp...buy that beggar a cold drink, chaat or food ,as at least that will go into that childs mouth...

Re: Beggers?? or needy??

yes...its a habbit unfortunatly of many people ......they have no shame and just ask for money without any hesitation.........you earned your money halal you can't give it away to fraudsters (my view at least)...

if someone is begging.....i just try to decide on thing.......are they capable of earning on their own by doing any sort of work?? well......if i see they can easily earn........i don't give them money.........

if they are old, or disabled then i give without any hesitation.......

Re: Beggers?? or needy??

I myself am in the habit of helping the needy. I have a certain list of organisations who really help genuine needy people. I often pay my donations there and sometimes manage to guide such people to these organisations. A lot of deserving people have got the help they deserve. And it helps them in more ways than the one time 50 or a 100 we give them. And about the cheats, they really wouldnt go there or their bluff would be called.
I find it divine to be able to be there for someone and I think maybe it is Allahs way of making us do the deeds which elevate us in his eyes.
Our compassions often put a curtain over our eyes and we cant figure out who is real and who is not. Sometimes a good deed is done just listening to the heart. And Allah knows the best. It wont be taken away from us.
