Beauties squabble over Miss World boycott

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Miss Belgium burst into tears after a public clash with two rival beauty queens over plans to boycott the Miss World (news - web sites) pageant in Nigeria to protest human rights abuses.

Beauty queens from half a dozen countries have threatened to boycott the December pageant unless Nigeria overturns an Islamic court ruling condemning a woman to death by stoning for adultery.

The row erupted at Brussels news conference on Wednesday when Miss Belgium Ann Van Elsen took issue with Miss Sweden and Miss Italy for saying they were opposed to the boycott.

“I don’t really agree with you when you say (boycotting) a beauty contest doesn’t really have any effect,” said the petite, raven-haired Van Elsen.

There are several issues that can be discussed. But first I would like someone to confirm what is being said in this news: Beauty Pageant in Nigeria.

Nigeria claims to be implementing Sharia, which Islamic Sharia allowed them to hold this contest?

Yes, I just checked myself, Nigeria will hold Miss World 2002 competition.

What are they trying to prove here?

Nigeria has a skim majority of Muslims, (Muslim 50%, Christian 40%, indigenous beliefs 10%). Even though the other majority (Christians) are also very conservative they are not fond of Sharia laws.

Some states have a majority of Muslims while others have a majority of Christians. The states which do have Muslim majority have recently started implementing the so-called Sharia laws, but like Pakistan they are hand picked laws, not Sharia as a whole.

The situation is far more complex with Nigeria being the most populous country of Africa & having more than 250 different ethnicities which are not always of same religion.

So are you saying that Nigeria as a country is not following Sharia? The “state religion” is not Islamic Sharia? If yes, then what is the “state religion” of Nigeria? But the whole world refers to Nigeria as “a country where Islamic sharia is implemented” etc. :confused:

Bhai, the official name of the country is "Federal Republic of Nigeria" and the legal system is based on English common law, Islamic Shariah law (only in some northern states), and traditional law.

This is the gross hypocricy which the scholars talk about. But on a personal note-no harm in holding a Miss World, all the enterants are there cos they wanna be.

Big deal miss world 2002 is not bein held in nigeria or any muslim country i hope it does'nt go ahead in any country muslim or non muslim.

We don't ned this propoganda of women displaying themselves half naked. Woman is supposed to be a honour and be protected from this kind of behaviour.

Also a warning to muslims participating in western organised events where they will be blackmailed to follow the wests agenda where islam will be attacked as backward and barabric also allowing them to intefere in our political affairs and business.

Nigeria has always existed in fear of religious tensions and violence.

Nigeria is officially a secular state, following mainly British Colonial Law. Remember, the Nigerian President is a Christian. As I understand, the Nigerian consitution would prevent Shariah law from ever being implemented.

However, the 11 northern states within Nigeria are populated mainly by Muslims. The regional governments in these states have decided that man-made law cannot overrule divine law, and so have implemented Shariah law.

As I mentioned earlier, this is technically illegal and a breach of the Nigerian constitution. However, the Nigerian government is aware that any official moves to surpress Shariah law will lead to civil war. Therefore, whilst it criticises the implementation of Shariah law and says the norther provinces should revert to Nigerian law, the government makes no actual effort to end the existence of Shariah laws in Nigeria.

will you also vote for stopping Mr.Universe contest where we can flex muscularly? why only not expose womens muscles? this is hypocrisis.

also may be you want beaty contest per law all women wearing hijap and covered head to toe. that will be truly per religion law and you can judge which garment is best!

au contraire, it is your hypocrisis that women should watch out far!

It is a beautiful Command of Allah Ta’ala that women should cover themselves…
you do NOT have any right to make fun of this beautiful covering…
and yeh women don’t wear HIJAB to show it off …they wear it for The Sake of Allah …and only for His Pleasure…

In surah 24: Al Nur (or The Light), verses 30-31 it says:

“Say to the believing men that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty: that will make for greater purity of them: And Allah is well acquainted with all that they do. And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty: they should not display their ornaments except what must ordinarily appear thereof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty…”

Surah Al-Ahzab (33:59) states: “O Prophet [PBUH] Tell thy wives and daughters and the believing women that they should put on their outer garments; that is most convenient in order that THEY MAY BE RECOGNIZED (as Muslims) and not be molested.”

One should NEVER FEAR ANYONE BUT ALLAH and then all of his/her fears will be erased from the heart. Those who bow before Allah, bow to no one in the world - no one. As great poet of the east Dr. Allama Iqbal said (in Urdu) :

yeh Aik sijda jesay tu garaaN samajhta hai hazar sijdooN say daita hai aadmi ko nijat

Translation: This one bow (to Allah) which is so hard for you,is the bow that saves you from thousands of other bows.

fine no problem with me Mr Universe is half naked too and this is not acceptable in islam so should be stopped.

I am a muslim i hate this stuff if you are a muslim it totally haram for you to like this thing man or woman half naked in public.

If you are a non muslim i don’t expect anything else but peverted instincts. :nono:
