Re: beats (chuqandar)
SAJAL I cook it with Keema or make just subzi on it. Yummy! one of my favorite dishes. you eat it with roti. Also I add them in salad and Sandwiches I make.
Re: beats (chuqandar)
Can u please share your recipes.
And when u use it in a salad do u use it raw or cooked?
Re: beats (chuqandar)
i love beetroots :)
usually we make beetroot with chicken or beef..just like regular haldi kay masalay wala salan..and add chillies and tomato paste near the end.. we do keep the same masala for subzi as well..its minus the meat.
i personally don't like raw beetroot..but i have seen people using them in salads with coleslaw (mostly shredded)..and the same mixture i have seen in sandwiches. Besides that, i have seen shredded beetroot in mediterranean style salads that are available in grocery stores with oil..many types of bean etc.
Re: beats (chuqandar)
Don't they make the salan sweet though???
Re: beats (chuqandar)
yes, kind of..its chutpata..khata meeta..tomato paste..green chillies..coriander powder..chilli powder and turmeric does balance out the taste..but beetroot itself is a bit sweet. Not everyone, likes that taste. My ammi doesn't like it..but i do :)
Re: beats (chuqandar)
Sajal, my mum makes heavenly beetroot ka halwa, it's just like carrot halwa, but I believe she steams the beets after grating them, maybe to soften them (??) after that it's the same process as carrot halwa.
For salads, I pressure cook sliced beets in slightly salted water, and then chill them. I do not like raw beetroots.
My mum also makes carrots/beets ki sabzi. Give tarka with zeera and green chilies, add chopped carrots/beets, cover and cook til done. Then add some grated coconut and green dhaniya and cook for 5-10 mins.
I have got to try Qrius' recipe for beetroot with chicken.
Re: beats (chuqandar)
We used grated beets in salads
Re: beats (chuqandar)
hmmmm.....
I think I will try all of the above recipes.
Beat halwa sounds very interesting so do beat salans.:)
Re: beats (chuqandar)

Re: beats (chuqandar)
Keema Chaqandar
1 can of chaqandar or 2 big steamed chaqandar( use cooker for quick steaming)
1/2lb keema.
2 medium choped tomatoes
1 small choped onion.
1 tsp salt/red peper/chat masala/fresh lemon juice/pomegrande(ANAR)juice.
Heat Oil in wok, add tomatoes, onion and all masala together. Cook till you see paste of masala. Add Kemma and can chaqandar. Fry it well in masala. When keema is done put it on low heat for 5 min(DUM MARO DUM) :) . Garnish it with fresh coriander leaves and green chillies. ENJOY!!
Ps: salad and sandwiches I use cooked or steamed or caned chaqandar. Chaqandar is root and very hard to digest . Once I had fresh carrots and chaqandar juice ghosh! my stomach ached for two full days. So always eat roots vegetables steam in cooker or canned. ;)

Red Beet Pita Sandwich
Ingredients
1 can red beets
1 pkg. pitas
1 cup tabouli or Mediterranean salad (from deli)
1 cup hommus
Warm pita in toaster oven or non-stick pan. Spread with hommus, top with tabouli and sliced red beets.
The contrast of flavors is fabulous!!! The hommus is bland, but creamy. The tabouli has a sharp taste, and the beets are sweet.
yummy :)
