I don't think a statement like that is one that will shock you. In fact I don't think many things shock you ... Perhaps you are looking for reasons not to commit?
And anyway, what prompted him to say that?

Okay no one is perfect ... and the reason why I married hareem01 was because of a number of things one of which was looks, but before looks was mental compatability and her innocence. Also, she had a very strong sense of tradition and that seemed amazing to me.
Write down on a piece of paper 5 things that you would like to see in a potential husband ... if that bearded brother fits 3 of them then try to get him to understand that you are looking for a mature man and not a person with a humour of a teenager ... It could work he may change for you!
Beards are an acquired taste ... but we aren't asking you to eat them ... You'll see, the fewer things about someones character that you have to complain about, then the less likely the beard will be an issue for you.
