Re: Beam me up Scotty!!
Is that all you have to say? :(
I don't own a S3, so what to say. :( LOL was for the thread how it turned out in the end.

Re: Beam me up Scotty!!
Hmmm, alright chalo theek hai.
Re: Beam me up Scotty!!
OK, some technical stuff,
S Beam is just an updated version of Android Beam (Android beam doesn't supports all the file formats like S Beam), Android Beam is not exclusive to Samsung, you can use it on any Android phone with Android 4.0 or later and NFC.
S Beam, just like Android beam uses NFC (Near Field Communication, that's why you need to touch the phones physically) to initiate and authenticate the transfer but the real transfer takes through WiFi Direct (that's why the higher transfer speed than Bluetooth).
Happy S Beaming :)
Re: Beam me up Scotty!!
Oh thanks for the detailed reply. I was wondering what this NFC thingy mabob is lol. Clearly not a comp/IT major. :p

Remember I started a thread on Google Wallet, where soon we will have NFC enabled terminals at stores and we could use our phones to pay instead of carrying credit cards? Well, that's another use for NFC.
Thanks Rayan. That was a very clear explanation.
Re: Beam me up Scotty!!
Oh yea! Well even then I didn’t know what NFC meant.
NOW it makes a whole a lot more sense. Where is the embarssed smilie?
Re: Beam me up Scotty!!
LOL hahah! I learned about NFC then too!! Hey, as long as we’re all learning, it’s all good
. I still don’t know half the things on my phone.
Re: Beam me up Scotty!!
I didn’t know NFC either.
Keep the knowledge coming people. :k:
Re: Beam me up Scotty!!
Seriously…
there is an app with this functionality for IPhone ts called: bump - only two years old
definitely great innovation sammy did ![]()
Re: Beam me up Scotty!!
Firenze, then why didn't you start a thread about it 2 years ago :@:!
Re: Beam me up Scotty!!
you are phunny !
Re: Beam me up Scotty!!
Firenze, but samsung has it so must it be new invention and innovative no?
Re: Beam me up Scotty!!
It’s not something that apple came up with.
I was also available for android phones back then.
You can only send pictures and contact info via bump, but you already knew all that…right?
Re: Beam me up Scotty!!
I’ve used Bump on my iPhone for the last year and a half and it doesn’t have half the functionality of Android Beam. The latter is based on NFC and Wifi Direct while Bump uses sensors/accelerometers on the phone and a cloud-based algorithm to match the bumps. Bump takes longer to transfer files, it requires an Internet connection, and can’t transfer large files.
That being said, with NFC being a core enhancement in the iPhone 5, I’m anxiously waiting to see what kind of apps and use-cases Apple has in mind for end-users.

LC homie, unfortunately iphone 5 won't have NFC from what's being reported on blogs and websites

ohh nooo... I was really looking forward to it. Hmmm... I'm sure Apple has something else/more interesting up its sleeve but I was counting on the critical mass of NFC users with the iPhone 5 for mobile wallet/payments industry to finally take off.
Re: Beam me up Scotty!!
^^ iPhone 5 sure will have NFC, but they may call it something else like MFC (Magic Field Communication), they already have a NFC app built into iOS 6 called Passbook where you can store your NFC tags (concert tickets, flight tickets etc). NFC on iPhone will be great for the industry as more companies will support mobile payments.

Yeah Rayan, I knew about passbook as well but after usman's post above, I did a little digging and it does seem that in the past week, there have been various reports that the iphone 5 will not have NFC. Obviously, nothing has been verified by Apple yet, so we have to wait and see... but if it's true, it'll be disappointing news for the mobile payments industry as a whole... not to mention numerous other apps that NFC would've enabled.
