What exactly is a beadie made up of and how does it differ from a normal cigarette? It smells awful and I can’t imagine how harmful it could be to ones health, but it seems to be extremely popular amongst Indians and Pakistanis?

its made up of dried leaves, im not sure what kind of leaves. the concept is pretty simple. like a doobie, you put some tobacco leaves in, and then roll it up. in a beedi the puffing end is tied around with a lil string to keep the leaf from opening up.
it does taste awful because it is raw tobacco without the filter. mostly consumed by villagers and not to well off city dwellers.
i used to go down to my parents' village often. it was amazing how many people i saw with beedis on. funnier even, it was consumed mostly by females. the males resorted to hukka (hubble bubble, sheehsa) for their tobacco needs.
oh okay, thanks cheegum for that bit of info. I tried it once and was almost passed out - not very pleasant stuff!
Beedi is really cool stuff!!!!
Ofcourse I don't smoke on a regular basis
