Be safe in Baltimore!

AsSalaamo Alaikum,

Just read about the riots, looting, and subsequent Emergency declared by Governor Hogan. There’s a curfew in place for all adults with the exception of work and medical related emergencies. If you’re out there, please be safe. Look after each other until calm has prevailed.

Baltimore erupts in riots after funeral of man who died in police custody

Re: Be safe in Baltimore!

baltimore has been ghetto for a while

Re: Be safe in Baltimore!

^ Ain’t been this ghetto.

Now THIS is a RIOT.

I can’t get over the senior center. Really? Like what does anyone get out of that?

Re: Be safe in Baltimore!

None of this is good news, but thankfully it was under construction and was not occupied at the time. That would have resulted in much more loss than brick and mortar.

“But it is not enough for me to stand before you tonight and condemn riots. It would be morally irresponsible for me to do that without, at the same time, condemning the contingent, intolerable conditions that exist in our society. These conditions are the things that cause individuals to feel that they have no other alternative than to engage in violent rebellion to get attention. And I must say tonight that a riot is the language of the unheard.”

I have seem folks use ghetto in a negative context here. To me, that mentality is ghetto.

"Last week when city leaders called peaceful*

protesters a lynch mob, they set the tone for a combative show. Last week was the time city leaders should have been seeking resolution of the problems caused by the policemen’s killing of a man by breaking his back.

I would say to them now. “Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it.” *Now what are you going to do?"

Baltimore reminds me of this..

^ this was what Rev King was pointing out - the OVERLY simplistic attitude. The MEME don’t fit.

Re: Be safe in Baltimore!

Use of “ghetto”, thugs are all code words. A substitution for the N word.

Of course people know the difference between a protest and a riot. No sane person would confuse the two.

From yet another thread from kos - one of the comments was quoting Baltimore Orioles owner’s son

an

The Orioles’ owner’s son hit it out of the park*

with this on twitter:

For The Win | What fans are talking about.

Brett, speaking only for myself, I agree with your point that the principle of peaceful, non-violent protest and the observance of the rule of law is of utmost importance in any society. MLK, Gandhi, Mandela and all great opposition leaders throughout history have always preached this precept. Further, it is critical that in any democracy, investigation must be completed and due process must be honored before any government or police members are judged responsible.

That said, my greater source of personal concern, outrage and sympathy beyond this particular case is focused neither upon one night’s property damage nor upon the acts, but is focused rather upon the past four-decade period during which an American political elite have shipped middle class and working class jobs away from Baltimore and cities and towns around the U.S. to third-world dictatorships like China and others, plunged tens of millions of good, hard-working Americans into economic devastation, and then followed that action around the nation by diminishing every American’s civil rights protections in order to control an unfairly impoverished population living under an ever-declining standard of living and suffering at the butt end of an ever-more militarized and aggressive surveillance state.

The innocent working families of all backgrounds whose lives and dreams have been cut short by excessive violence, surveillance, and other abuses of the Bill of Rights by government pay the true price, and ultimate price, and one that far exceeds the importance of any kids’ game played tonight, or ever, at Camden Yards. We need to keep in mind people are suffering and dying around the U.S., and while we are thankful no one was injured at Camden Yards, there is a far bigger picture for poor Americans in Baltimore and everywhere who don’t have jobs and are losing economic civil and legal rights, and this makes inconvenience at a ballgame irrelevant in light of the needless suffering government is inflicting upon ordinary Americans.

Re: Be safe in Baltimore!

I can’t believe you made an association b/w ghetto and N word. Not all ghetto places have black people. And no its not a substitution for N word. Jesus christ

Meanwhile someone is trying to weigh in with his stupid racist comments:

Thats why its said, If you don’t have anything helpful to say - shut up!!

Re: Be safe in Baltimore!

Ghetto by itself I agree. But used with thugs, yes. And also depending on context, yes. Not saying the ones who used it here intended it as such. It is derogatory in the context of the riot, and what precipitated it. We can agree to disagree on this.

Re: Be safe in Baltimore!

Right on cue, after the above post I read trumps use of the word thugs. It is racist. Now, had he used the word ghetto instead I would conclude the same.
