Re: battle hymn of the tiger mother

It's too late queer...it's too late :(

Re: battle hymn of the tiger mother

did you just call my mom old?

Re: battle hymn of the tiger mother

No, no she was just 10 when she had you...and you're just 17. :( But it's still too late.

Re: battle hymn of the tiger mother

My mother was quite the tiger mother too, but maybe it's just the way it's stated, her tone and approach were not the same, eventho what she actually did may have been similar. And I guess that makes all the difference.

Re: battle hymn of the tiger mother

Because it is about learning the canon and the classics. It is about memorization and regurgitation. It is not about flexibility or creativity. That's not to say that those instruments do not allow for these traits; I just think that's not what the tiger mother is looking for.

Re: battle hymn of the tiger mother

Amy Chua on last night’s Colbert Report:

Her tone is definitely different.

Re: battle hymn of the tiger mother

Who cares, i am not Chinese.

But i have just this to add... as a missing factor after reading article and watching her interview. Well What's missing?...the religion factor! The balance of love, diligent discipline and teaching via the religious text.

Re: battle hymn of the tiger mother

^ That's a good point. I wonder if she addresses a higher power in her book.

Re: battle hymn of the tiger mother

From what i get, she is pure hard-core Atheist.

Re: battle hymn of the tiger mother

Sahar, I suppose it boils down to the understanding between parent and child. I wonder what her daughters have to say about it all.
Colbert says I can't view the video from my location. :(

Re: battle hymn of the tiger mother

oh no! her daughters were in the audience (one is 18 and one is 15).

In the video she says that the book is really self-deprecating, because, as the full title says, she was "humbled" by her 13yo. This style just DID NOT work with her, and so Chua negotiated (allowing the daughter to play tennis rather than violin!). Chua also said that she feels she cannot pull off the "tiger mother" approach as completely as immigrant mothers, whose own turbulent and struggle-filled lives lend more force to their demands. I think that makes a lot of sense.

Re: battle hymn of the tiger mother

I read her book - it around $20 USA.

I'm not surprise because it's true. Just ask any mother in Singapore (chinese) they will agree with Amy 1000%. She also mention abt Pakistani parenting style which is EDUCATION EDUCATION EDUCATION.

Will try her style on my kids ;)

Re: battle hymn of the tiger mother

Ah, interesting. Certainly a different perspective from how it has all been reported in the media. Thank you for the summary.

Re: battle hymn of the tiger mother

Also she emphasizes it's a memoir, not a how-to book.

Re: battle hymn of the tiger mother

“This is a story about a mother, two daughters, and two dogs,” the book’s cover declares. “This was supposed to be a story of how Chinese parents are better at raising kids than Western ones. But instead, it’s about a bitter clash of cultures, a fleeting taste of glory, and how I was humbled by a thirteen-year-old.”

Re: battle hymn of the tiger mother

The paperback comes out here next month, so I'll get it then. All controversy aside, the cultural difference in parenting thing is interesting.
