Imran emerges as big prospect for PM slot - thenews.com.pk

LAHORE: Imran Khan succeeded in organising an awesomely large public gathering at Minar-e-Pakistan on March 23. According to estimates, there were at least 200,000 people at Minar-e-Pakistan on that day. As it was an election public rally, those all present could be called the election workers of Imran Khan. Those hundreds of thousands of people could have not braved strong winds and lashing rains had they not been sure of support of millions of voters sitting in their houses.

In fact, Imran Khan’s gigantic rally on March 23 has dimmed the chances of Mian Nawaz Sharif becoming the prime minister after the 2013 general election. The huge public meeting has brightened the chances of Imran Khan emerging as a strong candidate for the premiership after the upcoming elections.

Pakistan Muslim League-N even failed to gain majority seats in the Punjab Assembly in the 2008 elections. The Imran Khan show has made it clear PML-N’s seat in the PA would further decrease in the 2013 elections.

PPP had also failed to win urban assembly seats in 2008 polls, though its candidate also took the sympathy vote in the wake of Benazir Bhutto’s tragic assassination. Now all and sundry seem blaming the PPP for corruption and accusing it of inefficiency due to loadshedding in Punjab’s urban areas. This situation has further eroded the PPP vote bank in Punjab’s cities and towns.

During the 2008 general election in Lahore, PPP’s candidates secured up to 22,000 votes on average, while the PML-N’s candidates for National Assembly seats secured 70,000 votes on average. Even if Imran does not chip off a single vote of the PPP, votes secured by his candidates would not benefit the People’s Party. However, there are strong chances that the PTI would not only snatch a large number of votes from the PML-N candidates but also of the PPP’s.

Shahbaz Sharif’s construction of roads and growing of flowers in nook and cranny of Lahore would strengthen the PML-N vote bank in the provincial capital, but the same thing would damage its popularity in other cities of Punjab.

Every participant in the PTI gathering in Lahore was in favour of a change. People at the rally charged Nawaz Sharif with doing nothing for producing their own electricity, and only made hollow slogans against the PPP government in the Centre. No practical steps were taken for reducing unemployment in the province and spent major part of development funds only in Lahore, they claimed. Other cities of Punjab were ignored in the development process and the provincial government failed to protect Christians of Joseph Colony in Lahore. The Punjab government also failed to check police highhandedness in the province. Mian Nawaz Sharif told the nation lies about his going to Saudi Arabia as a result of his secret deal with Pervez Musharraf.

The participants in March 23 rally accused the PPP on two counts: the federal government indulged in corruption and could not end loadshedding. However, most of them expressed soft opinions about Nawaz Sharif compared with Asif Zardari. Most of rally participants were youth from the urban middle class.

The Spokesman Pakistan - PTI making inroads into Bahawalpur

PTI making inroads into Bahawalpur

Monday, 25 March 2013 00:00
Written by The Spokesman

SALMAN ABBAS

ISLAMABAD: In what can be a major political achievement for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Bahawalpur National Awami Party (BNAP) chief Nawab Salahuddin Abbasi is mulling to merge his party into PTI with an aim to sweep the upcoming elections in Bahawalpur region, it has been learnt.
A senior PTI leader, seeking anonymity, told The Spokesman that a secret meeting was held between the PTI Chairman Imran Khan and BNAP chief Nawab Salahuddin on Monday in which it was decided that the BNAP would be merged into PTI so that the candidates belong from major political parties could be beaten during upcoming elections.
Sources informed further that Abbasi along with PTI Chief Imran Khan would make the announcement in this regard on Tuesday (today). They said that the BNAP had formed a committee under the command of its senior party leaders for working out modalities with PTI leadership for a merger. “Nawab Salahuddin found the PTI programme of change similar to the BNAP plans for the masses living in Bahawalpur region, so he decided with the consent of the party leadership to merge his party into PTI,” revealed the sources.
Sources were of the view that Nawab Salah-ud-Din Abbasi was considered as the king maker in the whole division as all 17 candidates, supported by Abbasi during the general elections of 2008, win the seats for National and Provincial assemblies, adding that Abbasi also remained Member National Assembly (MNA) for four times.
They said that Nawab Salah-ud-Din is likely to be given an important assignment in Bahawalpur region. However, the sources claimed that that BNAP chief had not set preconditions for joining the PTI and it was purely based on a principled stance of both political parties.

Re: Battle for Lahore.

Nawaz Sharif had a big jalsa no doubt…

The Spokesman Pakistan - Nawaz launches poll campaign without gusto

The launch of PML-N’s election campaign from Mansehra may have indicated a few early trends.

The Imran Khan phenomenon, particularly the PTI’s Lahore rally, seemed to have shattered the PML-N confidence. It was obvious that Nawaz Sharif was on the defensive. He took a long time explaining that he never lies and said ‘when I say something I stick by it’. Many thought this was in reaction to Imran Khan’s bravado that he would never lie to the public.

Now, we are not saying that it amounted to, as they say in Urdu, Daal May kuch kaala, but it was funny that Nawaz Sharif reacted to something that was said in general.

The otherwise conservative PML-N was also found copying the PTI in using music at the jalsa. But it was definitely not as orchestrated as it is in the case of the PTI. Nawaz was found getting distracted by it and stopped it a couple of times.

The PML-N also needs a more creative theme for its campaign. In Mansehra, it revolved around two hackneyed planks. The one that harped on promising development schemes is trite and more suited for the parties in power - as Perviaz Asharaf announced Rs 2 billion development projects a month ago not far from here.

Nawaz went a step ahead by announcing a super expressway all the way from Mansehra to not just China’s border but onto Kashghar and Beijing. Take a breath Mian Sahb, one is tempted to say, China is another country. It was funny because only this week Shahbaz Sharif, perhaps in an effort to please the Americans, took exception to the PPP decision of giving Gwadar to China. Nawaz made so many promises that, a tweet remarked, the only thing left to be announced was a seaport in Mansehra.

The second ‘honey-and-milk’ theme was about reminding people about the Camelot that he ruled ‘when goods were cheap and electricity was available’. He kept parroting the old ‘if I had stayed in power’ mantra.

Nawaz is definitely stuck in the self-created delusion, as Pervaiz Musharraf and Asif Zardari after him, that he had done wonders in improving the lot of the people. Of course, he remembers the big landmarks as the Motorway but forgets that the average growth rate of his seven years rule was 3.5 percent. This was less than in both the PPP and Musharraf governments. Nawaz Sharif’s promise to create the Hazara province is too little, too late. The movement may have waned but still touches a few raw nerves. The introductory speech to the election campaign, I think should have been more inspirational, giving some vision of the party. That he chose Mansehra as the first venue also says something about the PML-N approach. May be the party was trying to avoid a comparison of numbers with Imran Khan.

Many questioned the venue because Mansehra happens to be the hometown of Nawaz Sharif’s son-in-law, Captain (Retd) Safdar, who is now joined by his wife Maryam in politics. The PML-N is already accused of becoming increasingly clannish and dynastic.

Also, Safdar is accused of controlling the local politics in an annoying way. He made the party give ticket to his younger brother Tahir in 2002 elections. He lost the seat to the MMA. The party retrieved the seat in 2008 by giving the ticket to Faiz Mohammad who died in 2009. Safdar again pressured the party to give ticket to his brother in by-elections, which he lost again. This caused lots of resentment in the local leadership, fueled by Safdar’s rudeness. At one stage the whole party revolted and even Sardar Mehtab virtually left the PML-N. Nawaz had to salvage the situation by temporarily suspending Safdar. Many thought that Maryam was brought in as his proxy.

But Safdar was seen active again. Nawaz particularly mentioned his son-in-law twice in his speech. This might be trouble for the PML-N, which already faces a challenging situation in its traditional stronghold of Hazara. It will be important to see if the PML-N gives the ticket to Safdar or his brother from here. Mansehra’s NA 21 is held by JUI-F’s Laiq Ahmad, who was supported by PTI’s Azam Swati in the last elections.

PTI has also got in its rank the runner up in the by-election, Zargul Khan, who is the influential Nawab of Kala Dhaka. The PTI is a force to be reckoned with in the Hazara belt.

It is a big electoral victory for the PML-N to retrieve Sardar Yousaf back from the fold of PML-Q. His son Shahjahan won twice from NA 20 and they are formidable if runner-up Salahuddin stays in the party even after being denied the ticket.

But things don’t look that rosy in Gohar Ayub’s Haripur constituency, NA 19. In a game of musical chairs, PML-N sitting member Sardar Mushtaq has joined PPP, which has little chance here. PML-Q’s Omer Ayub confronts a tough battle against PTI’s Raja Amir Khan, who was a runner up here as an independent. PTI is better placed here as Gohar’s nephew Yousaf Ayub is also in PTI. An electoral arrangement with Jamat-i-Islami’s Tanoli makes the PTI formidable here.

Even Mehtab Abbasi is shaky. He won with a big margin but JI’s support to PTI will mar his chances. PTI’s Azhar Jadoon, who was a runner up in 2008, could be a formidable foe. But the crucial factor will be if Asghar Khan’s son, Ali Asghar supports him. If PTI gives the ticket to Ali Asghar and Azhar contests as an independent, the PTI loses a fair chance of winning here.

Sardar Javed Abbasi won with considerable margin in NA 18 but PTI’s Sardar Yaqoob, who won here in 2002 on PML-Q’s ticket is closing in. Nawaz Sharif, who won from here once, may choose to do that again. Tehreek-e-Soba Hazara Chief Baba Haider Zaman, whose popularity has waned, will be a spoiler if he contests from here. PTI has a fair chance here as well.

The bottom line is: Nawaz Sharif needs to rethink his electoral strategy. We are told that he genuinely thinks that he is the best speaker this country ever had. Or so people around him keep telling him. If that be the case, the party might be headed for bigger disasters than just the Hazara belt.
