Bath Safety

Right, so my next learning curve is around bathing a new born successfully :sahar02: I dont wanna sound dumb but I havnt handled a baby ever in my life so I need to know the very basics … Also those in the UK, please can you tell me of any specific products that might be helpful .. I am seeing so much stuff that its confusing me now, I dont know what is essential and what is not :frowning:

So far, I am confused about the following products and their uses , which one do you recomend I buy?
This is kind of a seat that can be folded , I dunno if this can be used for a new born?

The baby is so soft , i dunno if the newborn will be able to hold himself on this seat , it looks kinda hard surface

I thought this looks good but dont know if this should be used on its own or needs some kind of bath support seat to go under the sponge?

Questions:

  • How many times does a new born baby need to take a bath?
  • Is it safe to give the baby a full bath or do you just sponge them?
  • how do you handle a newborn baby bath if you are on your own?

Thanks so much guys for all your help

Re: Bath Safety

my boy took bath daily since he was 1 day old :) i would recommend the first bathing chair as it s comfortable for the baby, but plz dont use it till ur baby is atleast 2 wks.

Re: Bath Safety

I used the 3rd sponge till the time baby's neck held on its own! Loved it!

Re: Bath Safety

i have this bathtub

and i am using it since day one with that sponge(3rd pic)
its very convenient…

first few weeks are difficult then they will settle easily…
i gave the chair(first pic) to my friend as a gift and she loved it! she carries it with her while travelling to other cities n countries too…

i think it depends on weather too…if its cold then giving bath on alternate days is fine otherwise everyday (before going to sleep at night) is good so that they can sleep for atleast 2-4hours nonstop…but every baby is different…

if you meant with full bath is using soap, shampoo then yes i was applyin them since day1 on alternate days…

i was giving bath to my baby on my own since day 1…thanks to youtube…took help from there was quite scared but then got better after few days…

Re: Bath Safety

Thanks so much guys for the advise , please keep it coming in ..

Nancy, you said not to use the first chair for at least two weeks .. why so?

Raania, you used the sponge, on its own or over a seat?

Guys, I dont wanna use a tub .. hence why i am looking for chair kind of products so that fresh water can be poured on the baby rather then using the same water to give him a bath .. am i thinking along the wrong lines? :konfused:

Re: Bath Safety

^chair will be good if you dont want tub....
waisay tub has that drainage (hole) too....i keep it open while giving him bath....
and i never fill the tub with water...

Re: Bath Safety

one of my friend suggested this (belt over tub)to me too

but i already bought sponge so…
its good to handle newborns…

Re: Bath Safety

I have the first chair and love it. Usedit frombirth for both kids. Best solutionif u are bathing a baby alone.

CB when i had my daughter, nurse showed me how to give bath without these things. even though i had purchased one for the new born one i used after few months.

it was easy to have flat hand under her head and her body in water and with other hand rub/ clean her. this is how i was told by nurse bt after few months i used stand thing and after a year i used round sest thing.

Re: Bath Safety

this is the bathtub i have and i highly recommend it! the little ledge/seat keeps the bubba in a seated, semi-upright position and stops them from sliding down when wet, no matter how big or small they are. my kiddo’s been using it from birth and is still using it. its got two legs at the back that keep it very steady. when he was younger, we didn’t use the legs, but simply propped it up on the bathroom counter under the sink. when he got older, we put it in the bathtub.

at first we used a washcloth, but then we found a big round sponge at babies r’ us so we use that now.

we bathed him every other day when he was really little, but once he started crawling all over the place, he gets a bath every night. i do fill it up because he loves to splash around with his toys, but i keep the tap running and once he’s done, he gets picked up and rinsed off with fresh water. it does have a plug in the bottom though so you can choose to keep that open and not let the tub fill with water. when they’re wee though, they get cold quickly, so you have to be quick when bathing them but also you could let the tub fill up. its not like there will be pounds of dirt on them at that point.

Re: Bath Safety

That's the one we have too SGC! I love it!!

Re: Bath Safety

Use your mom :D my babys first bath was at the hospital and then after he healed from circumcision and belly button fell off. i say around day 12 or 13..yes we are disgusting :D

At home, for his first bath, ammi put him between her feet, the Pakistani way to do it...it worked just fine! Later we started using the hand me down bathtub, it wasn't great but I always used to wet towel with warm water and put that under him to keep him from sliding..it was warm in compared to the cold plastic and kept him in place... After about 7 months, he just sits in the bath tub with one of us in there, plays with his toys, splashes in warm water and then we soap him, rinse him and bring him out in the towel...works perfect!

Oh ammi did have a technique for washing his head, after his bath, wrap the baby I towel with his head facing down n shampoo n rinse..I can't explain but may be your mom will know it too. She had never let me wash his head in the tub!

Re: Bath Safety

GTG. I know exactly what you are talking about. When my youngest sister was born my nani used to give her bath the way you described ( between her feet and shampooing her hair )

Re: Bath Safety

erm GTG , problem is i wont have anyone with me .. no mommy :crying: so gotta learn to manage on my own from day one .. the midwife did tell me that they will help with initial bath at the hospital and later midwives and community workers will be visiting every now and then , at home ..

But just to prepare myself and buying the right kind of stuff, I need to know if the seat is ok to buy ( first picture)
Inshallah we plan to have the circumcision done in the first week after birth .. and until that heals i guess its just gonna be sponging rather then a bath .. but say from week two to three onwards its gonna be proper bathing .. I hope the seat will do :bummer:

Re: Bath Safety

I think the suggestions by SGC and Wendy are great. Although everyone is gaga for the first chair, I feel its a little more vertical for the baby, no? Alright you may push it down, but well a little baby is such a fragile thing. You never know. that precious planet whale of a tub looks better with its support at the sides.

I wont be buying any bathing chair since i wont need one. I have enough of manual help here. So maybe wont be even touching my baby with my inexperienced hands for bathing. But if I were you, I guess I would have gone for this one. Precious Planet

Re: Bath Safety

first month, my mom gave him the baths, every other day. she used thebath tub with the net. he got his 1st bath at the hospital, 2nd bayh was at home, bothhubby and i argued a lot during that bath. after that my mom gave him the baths till she left :D

now i give him a bath almost everyday in the morning, i just give him bath in our sink under running water, at this time, i feel to intimidated with the tub, we use the tub with net when hubby is with me. he loves our everyday morning bath and sleeps wel after it :D

Re: Bath Safety

oh my mom showed us to put our handon his head and face and then slowly pour the water on his head and face. we do that when both of us are giving him the bath. when i am by myself, i clean and wash his face with my wet hands, he likes that a lot better and never cries.

we are using tub w/net Target Mobile Site - The First Years Sure Comfort Newborn-to-Toddler Tub

Re: Bath Safety

oh, and CB i forgot to add if you’re concerned about water falling over his face, get this-
Amazon.com: Kids Shampoo Rinse Cup SRC44: Baby
its a plastic mug but the yellow side is soft, bendy rubber so you press that against the baby’s forehead gently and pour the water over their head. it works really well! its at babies r’ us.

we also have this to cover the bathtub spout since he’s moving around now and can bump his head on it easily- Safety 1st Whale & Baby Spout Guard - Safety 1st - Babies"R"Us

and this is a real knee-saver for me when i’m bathing him in the tub! Skip Hop Moby Bath Kneeler (Blue): Amazon.ca: Baby

Re: Bath Safety

I used the sponge Putting it in the sink. Would bathe baby with my mother, one of us would pour water with mug and one would wash. Then we'd flip baby on tummy and wash the back and hair at the end.

Re: Bath Safety

at hospital the nurse gave bath to my baby the very first day infront of me she told me the whole method...and then i gave him bath at hospital the other day so that i could get the hang of it nurse helped me though.....

also after circumcision i gave bath too you just have to keep that area dry after washing....

CB i would say buy that chair(first pic) as you will be alone too so you can use both hands.....it will be easy for you then...
