Any news on Basit Ali?
He was a good player. What happend to him?
He was great player. A victim of politics in sports. During Saleem Malik's days as captain, in a tour to S Africa he raised his voice agains Malik's "nationalism" (Punjabi/Mohajir etc.) and Basit announced his retirment. I'm not sure if he played after that. Rashid Latif also had announced it, but he later on withdrew it.
I don't know what he did after leaving international cricket, I tried to search all domestic cricket teams but never found him
I thought he had announced his retirement during the tour of Africa, due to suspicions of match fixing. He and Rashid Latif, together.

yes the reason Basit announced his retirement was due to the match fixing saga and had nothing to do with any regional issue.

He may/may not have spoken at the time of retirement but it was known that regional politics was dividing the team and Basit had differences /"phadda" with Saleem Malik.
Right.....I heard the same. But some accuses him being involved in match fixing...unlike Rashid. Till date nobody complaint about Rashid and that was the reason that he was brought back.
But I heard that Basit did 'a lamba haath' in match fixing and retired. Allah knows best.
i think basit ali was the scapegoat for others. being new in the team, probably he wasnt given the 'full share' ;) so he whined and was forced to leave. or, the punjabi/mohojir problems of the day led him to side with rashid. rashid being the senior got the opportunity to jump back while basit was left behind. i dont trust our team of that era so i think there is some truth to both the stories.
Well, we can have any number of conjecture on why he left the team.. regional issues, betting issues, his food was not good, his room was too small, his underwear was not launderied on time... I mean, we can just go on and on. The actual statement(s) made by him at that point said that he is retiring due to suspicions of match fixing. Whether that was the only reason or not, we don't know. So lets give it a rest.
The real question asked in the first post was, what is he doing now? :)
