says who? as long as they comply with the city's bylaw they are perfectly legal.

I don't about Canadian laws but in US, basement apartments are allowed as long as they comply with certain requirements related to safety and hygienic living.

One of my friends was sharing a basement of a house with another class fellow. They landlord of the house (happened to be a desi) didn't want it to be known that there were people living in his basement, apparently because his basement lacked certain regularatory compliances.

maybe it differs from area to area in US because in some areas dividing a single family home into units is not allowed, prolly due to real estate value impact. it can go from a rating of R1 to R3 and that impacts the neighbourhood. in these cases city will nto allow u to build a kitchen etc there to convert it into an indpenedent unit.

I don't think it is legal in Montreal either. In many parts of Toronto almost every house rents out their basements.

I know a friend who'll be moving to Toronto in August. Can you please give me the details on rent etc?

It's a legalized dwelling. All checked out and in compliance with city bylaws.

I will get the details and pm them to you.......but the property is available immediately and it may not last till August.
