Re: Basant Festival

He was a Sikh, he wrote blasphemy against Nabi Kareem :saw: during the Mughal era so the Muslim judge ordered him to be hanged and he was, later the Sikhs took revenge by killing Muslims during Basant and from then on a alot of them started associating the festival with memeory of that revenge.

Re: Basant Festival

How come hindu don't celebrate their goddess birthday anymore???

saying is believing will not work we need historical proof.

Re: Basant Festival

Hey Guys,

People blasting Basant as "un Islamic" or against the will of religion don't represent the true picture. Historically speaking, kite flying got its origin in ancient China.

Whether Hindus do it for their religious ceremony or whatever, we in Pakistan fly kites for fun and Basant as a festival comes around Spring time. Infact the color "basanti" is named after the sunflower when it starts to bloom around Spring time and also Spring is the time when people harvest their plants. Now that's a tradition practiced from ages in the region known as Punjab.

Basant has turned into a festival @least in Lahore where it's marked by gatherings and feasts. I am very much fan of Basant and I don't want flying kties all around the year but doing it once a year in a certain frame as said by the Pak Supreme Court is just fine and it does make sense.

Also, people celebrate Basant as a happy event that gets everyone involved just like we are watching the Pak-India series with everyone in our families sticking to the TVs. So, yea Basant has it's charm and let it be that way.

Let me know your stance!!

Re: Basant Festival

I have come across with many stories about the history of Basant and one of them is.

**Basant History
**
In the subcontinent legend of the 12th century saint Nizamuddin Aulia of Delhi has it, that he had been grieving the death of his nephew Taquiddin Nooh. His close friend and disciple Amir Khusro [both are buried within the shrine of Nizamudin in Delhi] decided to cheer him up.

Khusro met some village women on the road dressed up in yellow colors of the mustard that was in bloom at the time of spring.

On finding that they were celebrating spring and offering flowers to their gods, Khusro also dressed himself in yellow and went with these women to Nizamuddin. Nizamuddin on recognizing Khusro started to smile. That started the rest of the disciples to sing Persian verses and offer flowers on the grave of Nooh.
The Basant festival is still celebrated in Nizamuddin shrine by a ritual collection of mustard flowers from a village in Harayana followed by offering the flowers to the shrines in Mehrauli, and Naseeruddin Chirag-e- Delhi.

Now Lahore's centuries old walled city has become the official & unofficial center of Basant's Patang Baazi. Some old havelis [villas] of Gowalmandi and Heera Mandi, such as the "Barood Khana" Haveli or the old Gunpowder Villa near the old fort & Badshahi Mosque, have been renovated with great care by their owners.

Re: Basant Festival

Basant is not islamic as it is waste of time and money. Now it is also claiming lives.

Re: Basant Festival

In basant do you

a] Harm anyone ?

b] Steal anything ?

c] Do damage to property or lives ?

The answer to the above questions is no.

During basant:

1] People have fun.

2] Having fun is not a sin in Islam.

Thus, by statements 1 and 2, basant is not unislamic.

Re: Basant Festival

excellent answer, i completely agree!

Re: Basant Festival

Basant has lost its meaning even if it is a religious festival for hindus, now its more of spring welcoming festival for us atleast..so i dont think so it can be called Haram..but ..yes if its effecting the lives of people in some way than it shouldnt be practiced ..like ppl getting killed bcz of traffic hinderance and children running after kites..the best solution in my opinion is to celebrate it away from cities (parks must be designed for that) where no one gets hurt
