Barkat Ali

Got married just over a year ago. My walima dress was made by my susraal in Lahore - I don’t like their taste in clothes at all (very jhatka) and unfortunately they made a really paindoo dress for me. I hated the way I looked on walima day :frowning: but I try not to let it bother me as I keep telling myself it’s just a material thing; the more important factor is the marriage not the party!

Anyhoo, saasuji keeps going on about how beautiful my dress was and how expensive it was etc etc. She’s preparing for devrani’s wedding now so the topic has recently come up again. And she tells me my dress was made by a designer called Barkat Ali. I have been on these forums for ages now, but never have I come across this name before. I have mentioned other Pakistani designers to her, but she insists Barkat Ali is the MOST famous - they are known alllllll over Pakistan… :hmmm:

So people - has anyone heard of Barkat Ali? Can anyone post pictures of his work (I’m assuming it’s a he)? I’d be interested to see other things they’ve done.

Re: Barkat Ali

If it is lahore wala barkat ali, she is right. They have the best quality fabric and kaam quality but their designs are not 'stylish' as per current criteria. The kaam and fabric stays good for years and can be passed on to next generation in wearable condition

Re: Barkat Ali

^^^ yeah I think it is! ooo interesting! have you got pics of their work?

Re: Barkat Ali

She's right, barkat Ali used to be the most famous a generation ago, my mom's and aunts dresses were by him, really good quality kamkhaab ghararas. They are taken out once I. A decade for airing out and we prance around in them and put them back because they are not currently in fashion.

Re: Barkat Ali

I still go to them for complicated and tricky colours for dyeing !
