Barfi...

What can you do with about 3-4 pounds of barfi? Any dessert ideas?

I can’t give it to anyone because it has been refrigerated already and barfi loses the taste after that so I just want to make a dessert out of it.. is it possible?!?!

Please share the ideas.. thanks

Re: Barfi...

Thanks everyone for "viewing" the thread :p

Anyway, my cooking advisor solved the problem for me so I am all set!!!

Re: Barfi…

Now this might be a bit off topic…but imagine a non-desi trying to say “barfi”.

They would pronounce it as “baarfi” or barf (vomit). Oh no!

One time my sister offered her non-desi friend some barfi and she enjoyed it. Then the friend told others how my sister fed her some “baaarfi”. It was hilarious!!! And I’m sure it didn’t so appetizing when it was pronounced that way.

Ok Gemini…on a more serious note, here are some ideas. Left over barfi can be used to thicken and enrich kheer and kulfi. I got this tip from the following website below. This website tells you ways you can use leftover barfi, mithai, cake, etc.

Re: Barfi…

redvelvet.. why did you have to make it sound so gross?!?! I am never giving barfi to any gora/gori, and even if I did- I will invent a different name for it!

As per your serious note, this is exactly what I was told.. since I dun plan to make any kheer, gajar halwa or icecream anytime soon I froze the barfi away

Re: Barfi...

Smart thinking with freezing the barfi!

And you should be glad I told you the "baarfi" story. Now you've been warned of the possible consequences of feeding barfi to a gori. :D

Just make up another name for it, lol.

Re: Barfi...

gajar ka halwa.

Re: Barfi...

Yeah...gajar ka halwa..

Re: Barfi...

okay question for everyone who recommended gajar ka halwa.. I need to make dessert for the potluck (at least 10 people invited) so I thought lets just do this.. now how much barfi do I need to add in and when do I add that in?

If possible, please give me step by step instuctions for gajar ka halwa using barfi.. thanks!!

Re: Barfi…

Hey Gem,

I haven’t heard of barfi being used as a thickening agent for gajar ka halwa…BUT…I have read that barfi can be used to thicken kheer, kulfi, and ice cream. Look at the link below. It’s a layered gajark ka halwa and ice-cream desert. And to create the layer, all you need is a mousse ring…and you can easily buy that from a store that sells kithchen ware. Now here is my suggestion if you decide to follow this recipe…don’t use the barfi for the gajar ka halwa. Instead mix the barfi in the ice cream. This will lend a unique desi flavor to the ice-cream. And you can use regular vanilla ice cream…OR…you can buy a desi flavored ice cream (pista ice cream or kulfi ice cream) form your local grocery store.

Even if you don’t want to make this recipe…do check out the link and the picture. I think the desert looks cute  Here it is :

********* Click on the following link below. And then look at the menu on the right side. Click on deserts. Then click on carrot ka halwa and you should see the picture.

Re: Barfi...

One day we had an unexpected visitor and there were no biscuits or cake in the house to serve with his tea. So I looked in the mithai box in the fridge and it had dried out barfi left in it, and there was also a half portion serving of halwa left from when my mum sent it over.

So I heated up the halwa, chopped up the barfi and added it with some milk. It turned into a really nice rich halwa... the man was none the wiser and enjoyed it immensely! ;)

Re: Barfi...

redvelvet.. gajr halwa n vanilla icecream-- yummy combo BUT I won't have time to do this reight before serving because I have to take it to the potluck to someone's house.. I may try it at home later though!! Thanks for sharing!

Rupay Halwa.. first cheese and crackers and now leftovers.. girl, nyou are creative with stuff for guests :p

So yeah I got the PM for recipe.. I guess the person doesn't want to share her secret recipe ;) so I will keep it all hush hush too and make it tonite.. lets see how it turns out!!

Re: Barfi...

Gem,

My mom has made kulfi popsicles for parties. And the kulfi freezes in the cups...and before serving....my mom runs them through warm water...and then they come out. That's what you can do as well. Freeze them.......and then when you get to the party....take them out a few minutes before serving,

Re: Barfi...

I'm sorry to do this to you, but I always hear 'barf' in barfi too. :D

Re: Barfi…

redvelvet..I had to bring it to work and then leave for the party directly so I don’t find myself comfortable with that much work at someone’s place.. I just wanted to have everything ready so I went ahead with gajr ka halwa and added barfi in it- It took me five hours but It turned out yummilicious!!!
