[The Nation](http://us.rd.yahoo.com/dailynews/thenation/cm_thenation/storytext/120080/16329961/SIG=10qa2akrp/*http://www.thenation.com) -- Finally, we have discovered the roots of George W. Bush's "compassionate conservatism."

On the heels of the president’s “What, me worry?” response to the death, destruction and dislocation that followed upon Hurricane Katrina comes the news of his mother’s Labor Day visit with hurricane evacuees at the Astrodome in Houston.

Commenting on the facilities that have been set up for the evacuees – cots crammed side-by-side in a huge stadium where the lights never go out and the sound of sobbing children never completely ceases – former First Lady Barbara Bush concluded that the poor people of New Orleans had lucked out.

“Everyone is so overwhelmed by the hospitality. And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this, this is working very well for them,” Mrs. Bush told American Public Media’s “Marketplace” program, before returning to her multi-million dollar Houston home.

On the tape of the interview, Mrs. Bush chuckles audibly as she observes just how great things are going for families that are separated from loved ones, people who have been forced to abandon their homes and the only community where they have ever lived, and parents who are explaining to children that their pets, their toys and in some cases their friends may be lost forever. Perhaps the former first lady was amusing herself with the notion that evacuees without bread could eat cake.

At the very least, she was expressing a measure of empathy commensurate with that evidenced by her son during his fly-ins for disaster-zone photo opportunities.

On Friday, when even Republican lawmakers were giving the federal government an “F” for its response to the crisis, President Bush heaped praise on embattled Federal Emergency Management Agency chief Michael Brown. As thousands of victims of the hurricane continued to plead for food, water, shelter, medical care and a way out of the nightmare to which federal neglect had consigned them, Brown cheerily announced that “people are getting the help they need.”

Barbara Bush’s son put his arm around the addled FEMA functionary and declared, “Brownie, you’re doing a heck of a job.”

Like mother, like son.

Even when a hurricane hits, the apple does not fall far from the tree.

such sympathy and pain for poors :stuck_out_tongue:

Re: Barbara Bush: It's Good Enough for the Poor

i saw that interview.... i dunno whether to laugh or cry.

lets have one for arnold Sch. now......

Re: Barbara Bush: It's Good Enough for the Poor

So thats where he gets it from

Do you guys now understand why I say that people need to apply for permits in order to reproduce!

Re: Barbara Bush: It's Good Enough for the Poor

wife of a mediocre president supporting the action (inaction) of an ineffective one..who happens to be her son. Please god, no more presidents from the bush family. We need more presidents like Ronnie...not like these characters.

Re: Barbara Bush: It's Good Enough for the Poor

George W. Bush joked about the fun he had as a youth in Houston when talking to reporters during his stop in New Orleans the other day.

It's like the family lives in some other reality.

Re: Barbara Bush: It's Good Enough for the Poor

John Nicholas is an ar$e wipe of Mikey Moore. It is OK to read and post commie leftie blabbering. However believing every commie word as if God himself wrote this article is really shameful. Barbara being an old lady may have used politically incorrect words. It is pity that a large Guppie vulture crowd is trying to rip her apart like a dead carcass. Shameful indeed.

Re: Barbara Bush: It's Good Enough for the Poor

She deserves to be lucky too. I'd like to see her fat, eye-bugging arse cramped up in one these shelters.

Re: Barbara Bush: It's Good Enough for the Poor

Barbara has always been an old bitch. SHe doesn't care about poor people.

Re: Barbara Bush: It's Good Enough for the Poor

Semi, take some metamucil and relax...it will pass

Re: Barbara Bush: It's Good Enough for the Poor

What needs to pass is this arrogant, out of touch family ruling our country.

Re: Barbara Bush: It's Good Enough for the Poor

sad.

Re: Barbara Bush: It's Good Enough for the Poor

amazing! and all this time I thought she had a better control of her senses than anyone else in that family. Unfortunately such statements do not come out without deep elitism. I'm trying hard not to let my Bush opinion pendulum (which has swung very close to 50 now) affected by his mom's attitude.

A few more of these and Hillary is #45

Re: Barbara Bush: It's Good Enough for the Poor

Not in your lifetime...FJ. This country is not ready for that.

:(

Re: Barbara Bush: It's Good Enough for the Poor

^ Barbara, Brownie and Chertoff are working hard towards that anyway. And let's not forget Hastert who seems to have gotten of easy

Re: Barbara Bush: It's Good Enough for the Poor

if one leaves aside the political correctness, she is probably right. There were some people born in NO, who never left its borders their entire lives and never knew any other place..now that they are finally moved by their bad luck, they might find some change in their lives....knowing how stagnant the lives were for them in NO, there is 50/50 change change might be positive for them.

but that is probably true for a small percentage of people...that does not belittle the tragidy the whole city has goen through.

Re: Barbara Bush: It's Good Enough for the Poor

^ pardon me, but that is asinine. and Barbara is the last person you can accuse of PC.

so if someone lived in their city of birth, their lives are stangnant? that should apply to almost 50% of west coast, 99% of midwest and a large part of southeast.

To say a cot in a dome shared with 15000 others is a better lot than what they 'probably' had before ranks right up there with eat cake.

Re: Barbara Bush: It's Good Enough for the Poor

I think Babs Bush is praying for a few more hurricaines to hit amerika then, because its good for poor amerikans !!!

Re: Barbara Bush: It's Good Enough for the Poor

what the americans would give to have a clinton in the whitehouse!

Re: Barbara Bush: It's Good Enough for the Poor

I saw the interview, she and Daddy Bush seems to be an active member of SKULL n BONES.

Interesting Fact: Try finding the meanings of BUSH in Romanian Language,

Laray Va Deray

Re: Barbara Bush: It’s Good Enough for the Poor

look…there are poor people trapped in the environments they are born in for their whole lives…once they get out of that environment for any reason and move to say from a village to a city, sometimes they find the change more encouraging for their economic development. Ofcourse immediate result is suffering and living in tents but I am talking about long term,…after this tragidy is over.

I know this guy back home who lived in our village with his large joint family in very poor conditions…quarrels, fights were the daily scene. The life was miserable by all standards…during one of the fights things got to a point where he was kicked out along with his wife and kids out of the house and out of the village…he moved to some other town and started a new life. now 30 years later he often say…that fight and kick out was the best thing to happen to him in life.

Poor people are not necessairly dumb and lazy…they are hostage of the environment that breeds poverty and other ills…same people in a different environment could be different.
