Baptism

What’s the religious significance behind this?

i am sorry this is a dumb question. Just curious. When someone converts from another religion to Christianity, do they have to be baptized? Are you considered genuinely Christian if you are not baptized?

Thanks in advance for serious, mature replies.

apparently when one is born one is born in sin. baptism is the process where one's sins are cleansed through christ.

atleast thats my understanding of it.
