Does banner exchange really work? If it does, please suggest a few good banner exchange programs. In an attempt to promote a site, I am trying to experiment my options without having to spend a whole bunch of money on google adwords.

It all depends on the KEY keywords. Use advanced search options to find out which keywords are popular. They could be worth it, if you really target the right group of people who are using certain key terms to search. You also need to write an effective banner.

Banner Exchange Services that I have come across, let you chose your categories, not keywords. One of us is at loss.

Banner exchange does work to improve google ranking. But thing is the website you are exchanging banner with doesn't use javascript to redirect to you site. If they link directly to you, then sure it helps alot..
But keep in mind that too many banners on your site will destroy layout of your site. Most banner exchange programes want you to put their banner on your index page.
Search good banner exchange and you will find many links. I tried it once exchanging banner. I had to quit exchanging banners later.

Thanks for your reply. Can you explain what you mean by the sentence in bold though? I am confused.

For example your site is http://www.madtalk.net/board or http://music.paki.ws
Now what would happend is when most of them put a link then it won’t go directly to you site. e.g. a site http://www.abc.com putting your add on http://www.abc.com/xyz.html. When they use redirecting php function or javascript then what happend is link to your site will not be going directly to your site. For example in this case when they are putting http://www.madtalk.net/board , link to your site may go like http://www.abc.com/bnbb.php?redirect=http://www.madtalk.net/board
I hope you got what I am trying to say. It won’t goto your site directly but will be redirecting. Search engine will be caching http://www.abc.com/xyz.html but it won’t understanding if redirecting is performed while linking to other sites. I am myself giving money to google adwords for advertisement but it will not help me improving site ranking since google uses redirecting thingy too… Websites use such kind of stuff to keep an out going track which is easier like that. They also do it for the reason that if your site gets popular from linking to your site then you may stop linking since you already have achieve good ranking in google or other search engine and traffic is already coming through such engine… I hope you understand what I am saying…
I would suggest to first look if the link the site you are sharing with links to other site with direct linking and not using redirecting stuff…
Well if you share link with the site with huge traffic and you believe you will get good amount of visitors of your choice then it’s not harm in linking. Since you won’t be needing much of search engine indexing since you are already getting target population. I am using google adwords although it doesn’t improve site rank because in cheaper price I am getting hits from there. So if even site rank not improving but still I am getting more people to my site…
