It related to class. As you mentioned gold was affordable for almost all classes in old days, but now its beyond reach of lower class. Even you may have observed that glass bangles were also got broken from a widow at the time of her husband’s death. These all are cultural aspects of sub-continent and our religion doesn’t allow them.
I’ve also observed that in old days, a widow couldn’t wear color suits or wear any zewar, but the trend is changing and now these useless customs are not being followed in that strict sense.
