Since we have a history together, I’m sure we have influenced each others food culture as well. Since they are famous for their fish and rice eating habits, there must be some exceptionally good recipes.
Has anyone ever tried an original BD dish? Please share the recipe.
I've eaten authentic bangladeshi food for years - purely due to my circle of friends being "east" pakistani!
There is noticeable difference between pak and Bangy food in fact its massive.
Not an expert so I can't say what the ingredients are but you can tell a Bangladeshi dish over a paki one if u were to do a "pepsi taste" challenge between the two.
Apart from the usual meat and chicken curries, they also cook a lot of fish dishes - Prawns are really popular as is dried fish - shootkee (aka Hootkee). Avoid dried fish at all costs - it stinks like it has gone off because thats essentially what it is. I think its called bombay duck and was banned in the uk at one stage.
Another observation is that Bangy women arent as good as cooking as paki women - the men seem to be better and that probably comes from the fact that 95% of all Indian Restaurants in the UK are owned and run by Bangladeshi's - and u wont see a woman chef anywhere for obvious reasons. On a separate note - and this is generalising I know but I have noticed that Pakistani women are so much more energetic than the Bangladeshi women I know - they can't cook well, they can never seem to sew clothes like paki woman can and they are always complaining about something - usually money and their hubbys!! Anyways..
Other things ive noticed: The eat things like mushrooms which most pakis dont seem to enjoy, boiled rice is served with everthing and they tend not to have rotis. Dishes tend to be drier unlike ours which usually have lots of curry. No sweet dishes that i can think of?
Most eat with the whole hands which is not a nice sight - the sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH) was to eat with the fingers.
Also - they love paan and some cant enjoy it without tabacco which not only causes mouth cancer but also gives them nasty stains on their teeth. It also stinks and makes them light headed.
If I think of anymore , i will update! BTW, any bangys on GS????
One of my good friends in England is Bengali. She made me 'traditional' Bengali style curry and it was so sweet tasting. It was clear in colour, no dark masalas were used and she used coconut too. It was meetha salan. I didn't like it cause I need spices, but it was traditional Bengali food.
I have had bengali food and as Neely said it's very dry.
I was served pilao with salad. That's it. No raita, shorba ..nothing. No spoons either - they're very good on the religion side of things. Eat with hands only.
And then if you have their yummy samosas and stuff. It just comes in a plate. No chutnies or sauces. You just like pick it up and eat it - i mean you have no separate plates or anything.
Found that very weird.
I did have these yummy lilttle things once. I can describe them as mashed potato with a bit of keema in the centre. Was dipped in breadcrumbs and fried.
And as for their curries - i have 'seen' the curries at a wedding and it looked awful. All of them. Watery broths with onions and whatnots floating around. Not the bhoona hua stuff we have.

I'm talking about Farhana. You met her. :p She already knows what I thought of the food she made ... I couldn't eat it. :D Poor thing had me and my mama an entire meal.
Me and this bengali pal of mine used to share and apartment, while she oohed and aahed about pakistani food that I brought from home (cooked by ammi dearest of course), I rarely remember her bringing anything from home that was authentically bengali. She’d always ask for the pakistani food recipes and then go home on the weekends and make it and bring it back. Anyway, I attended her engagement at a bengali restaurant and the food was pretty okay, they had biryani and sada chawal with qormas which were decently cooked me thinks. I shall ask her for good bengali food recipes next time I speak to her. Oh and they do love to eat with their hands :k: as do most hyderabadis I’ve come across.
From what i remember, their curries are not that bhoonafied but still taste really good. You can still see the payaz, etc in them. Also, they usually eat plain rice or rice with a tarka of piyaz on top. I didnt think thier cuisine was bad at all actually. But again, the ones who cooked food for me were knows as good cooks in our circle.
I have eaten Bangladeshi food for about 70% of my existance, very good friends of ours are Benglai and I have grown up with several families. I was trying to learn how to write it at some point but got lazy. I can understand stuff
Anyway, yea the men I encountered were amazing cooks, inface better than my mum:-/. I invited “uncle” over one day to to teach me how to cook chopped liver drools
But yes, their food is very different. As is afgani food to ours too.
I've had biryani from a Bengali restaurant in NY and man I loved it. The rice were a little bit smaller and rounder tan our basmati rice, but it tasted so good. It was the right combination of sweet and salty and spicy.
