Because of Global warming Bangladesh would be under water in the next hundred years. That would be a huge refugee problem of 140 million Bengalis moving to India.
On Bangladesh’s southern coast, erosion driven in part by increasing glacier melt and unusually intense rains already has scoured away half of Bhola Island, which once covered an area nearly 20 times the size of Chicago.
Land disputes, many driven by erosion, now account for 77% of Bangladesh’s legal suits. In the dry northwest of the country, droughts are getting more severe. And if sea level rises by 3 feet by the turn of the century, as some scientists predict, a fifth of the country will disappear.
“Bangladesh is nature’s laboratory on disaster management,” said Ainun Nishat, Bangladesh’s representative of the World Conservation Union and a government adviser on climate change issues. As temperatures rise and more severe weather takes hold worldwide, “this is one of the countries that is going to face the music most,” he said.
Re: Bangladesh would disappear from the map in 100 years
Is the govt. doing something about it? - other than just giving statements.....
Is UN contributing anything?
why're we assuming that India would take the refugees?
As water keeps rising, more and more people would be relocating to other lands. And India is the only country they can move. Unless they want to move to Myanmar.
I think Myanmar refugees are moving to Bangladesh, so I doubt whether Bangladeshis would want to go to Myanmar.
Imagine 145 million Bangalis moving to India. Already North East India is full of Bangali refugees.
Re: Bangladesh would disappear from the map in 100 years
Easily resolved issue, Dragon.
Come to think of it, i feel Bangalis will be more at home with the gujarati city of Karachi. Perhaps Hindustan can donate half of Karachi too to the poor Bengalis. :)
Re: Bangladesh would disappear from the map in 100 years
They rejected that in December 1971. Poor Bangalis, no more West Pakistan to run to.
True, they invited Indians in 1971 now they can be chums again, LOL...Pakis can help by clearing some land in bharat using Shri Ghauris & Barburs. Bangla-babu ji can move there and both can live happily ever after... :)
Re: Bangladesh would disappear from the map in 100 years
I don't think making fun of Bangladesh's future problems is the right thing. Chill fools they our brothers !!
Also, Pakistan and India both are also going to be facing huge problems due to global warming, maybe not to the same extent as Bangladesh but still it will be very serious. SAARC should have a dedicated unit working on possible solutions to all future global-warming related problems.
