What a waste…$58,000,000 spent so frivolously in a country where nearly 50% of the child population is starving, and with a non-existent tourism industry to boot. Frankly, I’m kinda curious as to where he got that much money to blow…is the Bangla film industry really that lucrative?

A life-size replica of the Taj Mahal, often described as the world’s most beautiful building, is due to open for visitors in Bangladesh. **

The replica has been built by a Bangladeshi filmmaker.

Ahsanullah Moni said he wanted his countrymen to experience the beauty of the Indian monument even if they were too poor to travel to see the original.

The 17th Century Taj was built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan as a tomb for his beloved queen, Mumtaz Mahal.

The emperor is buried next to his queen in the monument in the northern Indian city of Agra, which is visited by millions every year.

The $58m (£39m) replica has been built in Sonargaon, a small town in the Bangladeshi countryside.

‘Marble and diamonds’ **

Mr Moni, who is a successful director of Bangladeshi films, says he hopes his replica, which has been built an hour’s drive from the capital Dhaka, will also attract foreign visitors.

It took 20 years and 20,000 workers to build the original Taj.

Thanks to modern technology, construction of Mr Moni’s Taj has taken five years and fewer people.

But it has been neither easy nor cheap.

Mr Moni says he has imported marble and granite from Italy and diamonds from Belgium.

Architects were sent to India to copy the dimensions of the original.

Work on the surrounding grounds and ponds has still not been completed.

Only then will Bangladeshis be able to judge whether Mr Moni has truly copied the beauty and purity of the original Taj Mahal.

It doesnt even looks a bit like the original. even the original copy of the Taj, Bibi ka Maqbara, is much better than this.
and well, B'Deshi commercial movies, taking granted that this director is a commercial film director, sucks big time.
and as if Foreign tourist would come to look at this poor copy, if they have the original beauty next door.

Unless you are a communist, you should not have a problem with it. Its his money and if the law in his land allow him to do it then he has all right to do it. He may infact give employment to a large number of people during the construction.

I think its good to have any beautiful looking building anywhere. It may very well attract people to go there.

Its their personal choice. Many countires built expensive buildings, bridges, parks etc when they were poor and even in recession.

Why should we criticise for the sake of criticism?

Its like we criticise people taking shower saying.... What a waste, you will become dirty tomorrow anyway.:)

Let them be happy and more power to them.

There's a difference between questioning irresponsible conspicuous consumption (in a desperately poor nation no less) and being a communist. Then again, considering the fact that much of India's new elite are spending their money in a similarly frivolous fashion in their own desperately poor nation (India barely lags behind Bangladesh in terms of childhood malnutrition rates), I can see why you might be a little offended.

Janab, there is nothing to be offended.
Its an individual who is doing the construction and not the nation or the govt. Its his wish and he has the money to do it. If he had paid taxes and is abiding by the law of the land, how can you fault him.
You or anybody has no right to question this individual just because he is building a palace from his money. Its his right and he is using it.

Before you blink an eye, all the negative news will be spread about this building. Including its the center of bad guys planning something bad for India and whole world. Or the money was spent from some bad resources and whatever.

Good for BD to have a good looking building.

I was gonna say something else about this “news”, but this article about India fuming over a replica of Taj Mahal is just priceless. Its ROTFL kinda hilarious. :hehe:

On a more serious note, of course, buildings alone don’t make anything historic. Its the history behind those buildings that does. No one gets fooled by the rNeplica of Eiffle Tower in Paris Hotel Las Vegas. This is probably just another rich film-maker who has no idea how to spend his wealth. But to spend $58 million to build a replica is down right wasteful. May be he couldn’t think of building anything original. Hope Bengalis are happy to have their own Taj Mahal in their backyard.

If he's spending his money so overtly and publicly, then he's basically inviting public commentary. I have every right to express my opinions.

Why should you be so antagonostic towards India. If the money was spent from bad resources so much the better. They used it to build something rather than buy arms and kill people and claim that they would would go to heaven because they killed some kuffar.

The high comissioner has nothing to do like all clerks in govt. depart.. he too got famous by saying something against BD Taj.. Fool guy.. Taj replicas are sold just at the gate of Taj (although miniature size)
