Re: Bangladesh may drop Islam as official religion
Bangladeshis i've interacted with seem to be far less concerned with being overtly religious than most Indians, and Pakistanis for sure. And it shows in how their socio-economic indicators have overtaken India's already. Now if they can rid of their politicians that still do the whole divide and rule thing, they are in great shape to take off as a progressive nation.
Re: Bangladesh may drop Islam as official religion
Authorities in BD, for last few years, had been trying to divert their nation towards secularism. But here is the conflict, they are also turning their nation into a pure nationalist state with very less patience towards outsiders. Nationalism is good but only to a limited extent.
BD still has the largest islamic missionary congregation in the world every year. So its a long shot to say that they'll really turn away from religion but yes it may be the second step. (First was executing a lot of mullahs)
Re: Bangladesh may drop Islam as official religion
We separated from India because we needed a "Muslim" state. The whole separation of Bangladesh from Pakistan was based on nationalism. Hum idhar, tum oodhar. We started that. They are finishing it
Re: Bangladesh may drop Islam as official religion
World is not about what you like or not. The World is about what works or not.
So true, clergy liked burning women as witches, molesting children, amassing wealth and power in the name of their faith also and didn't like the idea of separating church and estate.

Re: Bangladesh may drop Islam as official religion
bangladesh was made by far-leftist / communist mujib where islam wasn't even mentioned in their first constitution. Of course, we know how he tried to become a dictator to be assassinated by his own army and islam was given preference after Zia-ur-rehman came to power.
Btw, isn't prostitution legal in bangladesh since 2001? How would a state giving islam its due credence work with that?
Re: Bangladesh may drop Islam as official religion
If Pakistan ever separated religion and government...that would be a game changer for them and a welcome one at that.
Separation of church and state is something Pakistan desperately needs. But that will not happen. The Pirs and Mullahs won't let it happen. The recent bill against domestic violence in Punjab...apparently mardon ko marnay ka haqq hai aur ye Islam ke khilaaf hai.
Re: Bangladesh may drop Islam as official religion
so what?
bangas will have new religion now. bangalism. their culture is dearer to them than religion - the very basis of their independence. i would have expected them not to have islam as religion - wonder what went wrong?

Re: Bangladesh may drop Islam as official religion

got it. Dhaka stadium is also known as Bangabhandu stadium.
BTW, whats your old nick on GS? just asking.
What was wrong if Bangalis followed Tagore as their intellectual guide. Apparently there is an anti-tagore lobby in India. But I just wanted to know whats the beef Pakistani carry against Tagore?

Re: Bangladesh may drop Islam as official religion
Who was Tagore?
A poet, a musician, a story and drama writer. His poems / taranas are adapted as India / Bengladesh's national anthems. The poet was banned in Pakistan for some years during 1960s.
Also related to Saif Ali Khan , being his mother Sharmila Tagore's great grand uncle.
