According to the annual survey by the Berlin-based organization Transparency International, the world’s least corrupt country is Finland and its most corrupt is Bangladesh. The index defines corruption as the abuse of public office for private gain, and measures the degree to which corruption is perceived to exist among a country’s public officials and politicians. It is a composite index, drawing on 15 surveys from 9 independent institutions, which gathered the opinions of business people and country analysts. Because of the absence of reliable data, only 102 of the world’s countries are included in the survey. The scores range from 10 (squeaky clean) to zero (highly corrupt). A score of 5.5 is the number Transparency International considers the borderline figure distinguishing countries that do and do not have a serious corruption problem.

well good to see Pakistan is not second last on the list as it was once. Maybe Musharraf's cleaning house has started to work. I guess Nigeria is still trying its best to be the best as a bad example?

All it means is that if you intend to drive fast and break the speed limit, then Finland is probably not a good choice for that. Your chances of successfully getting away by offering "chai paani" to the tulla is only three out of hundred. With luck, you will get either of those three, but don't count on it.

Because of the absence of reliable data, only 102 of the world's countries are included in the survey

The last I heard, there were almost 200 countries in the world. The above is more than enough to throw these results into doubt.

yeah where are burkina faso, burundi, lesotho, lichtenstein, malta and mongolia?

what an incomplete survey :(

A while back, the corruption data and some stuff regarding ranking of countries in accordance with democratic principles was the subject of some GupShup threads. I think it was Thap who did some incredible analysis and shared some graphs that were truly enlightening. If someone can find those threads, it might be time to link them to this thread.

Correct me If I'm wrong. Pakistan was rated 2nd most corrupt nation in the world before Musharraf regime. Today, Pakistan stands on 25. I think corruption has been rooted out in great extend from Pakistan without Democracy.

But there's still alot of work to do for the develpoment of the country.
