Bangladesh now scores higher than neighbor India on several key barometers of social development, such as infant mortality, child vaccination, and employment of women—a striking turnaround over the past decade or so. The country’s much-praised microcredit scheme, operated by the Grameen Bank, has lent an average of $120 each to 5.8 million people. And the government says 100% of young children are now enrolled in primary school, and that girls at last have equal access to education—goals that Zia, as a woman leading a conservative Muslim nation, had made a priority. “If we want to progress as a country, to remove poverty and spread awareness of family planning, we have to give [girls] equal rights,”

Great job by Bangaladesh... I did read about success fo Gramin Banks..
I feel proud that people have started comparing things with India and take pride if they are doing better or as good as India......
Re: Bangladesh is better than India in many aspects: TIME Magazine
one very important aspect of bangladesh is democracy has good inflence on the people. even though main religion is muslim, because of bengali ideology, people are more tolerant and hence more liberal. bagladesh definately have better chances to come up in the future. its very good for india aslo as she is also looking forword for healthy relationship with neighbours and that can only happen when neighbour itself is healthy.
if you read the article carefully, india is investing heavily in bangladesh and that too in core issues like coal, gas and power. If it proceeds as planned, that would exceed the total foreign direct investment the country has attracted since independence. it clearly indicates the growing trade relation between the two nations.
Re: Bangladesh is better than India in many aspects: TIME Magazine
God damn you are racist. Read what you read and change that around to any other race or religion. I love the fact how you say Bengali culture is more tolerant and imply that Islam is the opposite. You, sir, are a racist.
Navtech it does not show a growing trade relationship because that denotes equal benefits for all. Bangladesh is not benefitting from trade with India. Rather it is losing out due to India's comparative advantage.
Re: Bangladesh is better than India in many aspects: TIME Magazine
dear Grumpy, its not the comparison between the bengalis and muslims rather i have quoted bangaldeshis are more tolerant and liberal because they are bengali and muslim...the bengali muslims. the bengalis are always known for their peaceful and secular nature. when u say islam is opposite, what i interprete is that u considet all muslims in the wrold hardcore islamist and does not respect other religion which is not true because indian muslims are first patriotic and then the muslim. The same is true for bangladeshis.
secondly, indian investment in bagladesh DOES shows the growing trade relationship. its true that equal benefits for both india and bangladesh but afterall its trade-business. india wants to make money in bangaldesh and bagladesh wants enhance its industrial production. what's wrong in that???
indian companies are investing in bagladesh for it provide condusice envarionment for returns and business because of their democatically elected government
Re: Bangladesh is better than India in many aspects: TIME Magazine
Navtech, you heard about "Quick Gun Murugan"... We have one here........ :-)
Infact Pakistan's 8% growth is also commendable, and I hope they are able to run with good economic policies...overall strong region will help all....
Re: Bangladesh is better than India in many aspects: TIME Magazine
rahul, i appreciate your attitude..you mean as a whole region should grow and healthy neighbourhood develops. so good thought.. indian companies definately wants to make money in pakistan as in bangladesh.. but isn't it like towing a bullock cart by a supersonic jet
Re: Bangladesh is better than India in many aspects: TIME Magazine
Incorrect again. A paper by an Indian Proffessor in Colombia.
http://www.columbia.edu/~ap2231/Policy%20Papers/Saarc-wb.pdf
Read that. Any trade in South Asia will lead to over all trade diversion and ** not** benefit countries over all.
*Edit: That was supposed to be a negative.
Re: Bangladesh is better than India in many aspects: TIME Magazine
that’s what i want to tell you and that’s what the paper say. what’s wrong in that?
Re: Bangladesh is better than India in many aspects: TIME Magazine
Sorry i made a mistake. It will not benefit countries over all. Trade diversion leads to a loss of resources and a loss of benefits to countries. Read the conclusions. It does not benefit the region.
Re: Bangladesh is better than India in many aspects: TIME Magazine
It’s good to see Bangladesh perform so admirably. India has some serious problems with poverty to overcome, especially as people are being reduced to selling their organs for money to survive.

Re: Bangladesh is better than India in many aspects: TIME Magazine
Bangladesh is bound get good investment cause its declared poor country status by EU and US. hence it gets 0% Tariff on export to EU and US. other counteries can not compete with it in the region, Pakistan and India.
recently garments business moved to mainly Bangladesh or sri lanka from India and Pakistan. you will more often see made in bangladesh on GAP in stead of Pakistan now.
with consistant democracy, it is improving and reaping the benefits being poor and cashing in rightly.
