Bangladesh bombings

A series of explosions has rocked an opposition party rally in the Bangladesh capital, Dhaka, killing at least four people.

There were seven or eight blasts at the Awami League headquarters, as leader Sheikh Hasina addressed a crowd.

Ms Hasina, a former prime minister, was not hurt, but many people were injured.

The attack is the latest in a series of blasts in Bangladesh this year, including one which killed an Awami League leader in the town of Sylhet.

‘Crying for help’

Early reports of casualties vary widely, with unconfirmed claims of 10 dead and hundreds injured.

Sheikh Hasina was addressing a crowd when the blasts happened
Witnesses said many of those hurt were badly wounded.

“People were covered with blood, many injured were crying for help,” rickshaw driver Mohamad Yasin was quoted as saying by the Associated Press news agency.

Rafiqur Rahman, a Reuters news cameraman at the scene, said there was panic.

“I heard several blasts and people were just fleeing.”

He said many of those injured were women.

There has been no claim yet of responsibility.

The BBC’s Roland Buerk in Dhaka says police believe hand grenades went off in the crowd.

He says the scene was chaotic, as angry League supporters set fire to buildings and cars and were beaten back by police with batons.

Our correspondent says the rally had been called to protest against the attack in Sylhet in May.

Awami League General Secretary Abdul Jalil condemned the blasts, which he said targeted Ms Hasina, Associated Press reported.

18 died.

This time it was not bombs but just grenades.

Clashes erupt across Bangladesh

Violence spread to about a dozen towns and cities

Clashes have erupted between police and opposition supporters across Bangladesh after a bloody attack on a political rally in Dhaka, which killed 19 people.

Rioters set fire to a train east of the capital and there were reports of violence in about a dozen other towns and cities.

Thousands of people attended prayers for the victims of Saturday’s attack on Awami League party supporters.

Party leaders have called for a two-day national strike starting on Tuesday.

In the worst outbreak of violence, at least 17 people were hurt when a passenger train running between Chittagong and Dhaka was set alight by protesters.

Rioters also reportedly attacked a train station and damaged cars and shops.

Reuters news agency said police used bamboo sticks to beat back protesters in Dhaka.

More than 200 people were arrested, the agency reported.

Awami League supporters have accused the government of being behind what they called an assassination attempt, a charge the government denies.

The explosions took place soon after Awami League leader Sheikh Hasina, a former prime minister, addressed about 20,000 people.

She was taken away from the scene in a car at which the opposition says bullets were fired.

Chaos followed the attacks, demonstrator Muhammad Alamgir said.

"Everything was smoke. I couldn’t see anything.

“People were running. I was so scared I couldn’t move. I just sat down and people were running over me,” AFP news agency quoted him as saying.

Reuters quoted a police inspector, Rafiqul Islam, as saying eight people were being questioned in connection with the Dhaka explosions.

No-one has yet claimed responsibility for the blasts.

Prime Minister Khaleda Zia condemned what she called a “dastardly attack”.

The attack is the latest in a series of blasts in Bangladesh this year, including one which killed an Awami League leader in the town of Sylhet on 7 August.

The rally in Dhaka had been called to protest against the attack in Sylhet.

So Gujarat score 2000+ killed and 30000+ thrown in concentration camps makes Baha-Rat an RSS adda?.

Political Violence in Bangladesh

How did political differences among the two major parties in Bangladesh took such a violent character. Seems like Dhaka is headed towards a disastrous course, as a consequence of this recent tussle between parties that are headed by two head strong women. What is the basis for all this turmoil?

The turmoil clearly shows that politicians in the subcontinent have gone to the dogs. Political systems are nothing but killing machines. Gujarat score 2000+ killed and 30000+ thrown in concentration camps. Middle class Bharatis looted shops of their fellow countrymen during the reign of murder and mayhem. Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal have repeatedly shown that Military rule is the only solution. Bharatis, Pakistanis, and Bangladeshis alike can't keep their politicians in control. Time and again corrupt, Mafioso, and murderers have been elected without the fear of god or public. Lulloo, Advani, BB, Qazi, and Altaf can easily trot around the world while condemning innocents to death.

Political elite puts too much emphasis on "elections" and no attention to tax reforms. Tax system throughout South Asia belongs to 1600s. Time and again governments resort to taxing the utilities and other essential commodities. The results of such socialist + nationalist tax policies have been disastrous for the whole region.

It is time to establish independent tax office free from the Byzantine rules and archaic tax collection methods.
