Maududi’s works in the 1940 on the nature of the Islamic state are pretty logical. The text of a speech by Maududi that I read in book form on the nature of the political system of Islam can be found at the link below. It includes a clarification of what separates the Islamic form of democracy from the western form of it.
Interestingly, Maududi also stressed that non-Muslim citizens of an Islamic state should have the right to criticise Islam, within limits. In Pakistan today, it seems that non-Muslims have no commonly accepted right criticize Islam in any way… Pakistan’s attitude to religious matters is deviated very from not only Jinnah’s views, but Maududi’s too.
