Bangaldesh's test status

Seems like cricket for some has lost its charm since our famous cricketers, no matter how corrupt they were have been ousted. However, a news report reminded me today of the allegations that were levied towards our cricketers sometime back.

Bangladesh’s cricket team has been told to improve and win a match or two if they don’t want to be ripped off their test status. How far those news were credible back then when Pakistan lost to the Bangladesh’s cricket team which for many was beyond comprehension; thus providing them with an opportunity to play at the International level.

Cricket-ICC vows to change the fate of cricket in Bangladesh

DHAKA (AFP) - The International Cricket Council (ICC) has vowed to reverse Bangladesh's cricketing fortunes after repeated defeats in Test and other matches, an official said here.

"I honestly tried to point out specific areas where the ICC could render support to make Bangladesh more competitive as quickly as possible," Andrew Eade, ICC's Global Development Manager, told AFP before leaving Dhaka at the end of a two-day visit.

"The ICC wants to bring about significant changes in terms of result-oriented progress in Bangladesh's cricket within a short span of time," he added.

Eade said the ICC would help whittle down lists for a chief executive officer of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and a high-profile coach for the under-19 team as well as assisting and monitoring strategic plans.

"We also want to help build a national training centre with modern facilities and to restart specialised training programmes and to lobby the Asian Cricket Council to fund development activities in Bangladesh," he said.

Despite the general concern about the Bangladesh team's poor performance, Eade said he was confident that the BCB's present plans would help change the situation.

Some quarters have questioned the ICC's decision to give Bangladesh Test status in 2000.

The minnows have lost 18 of 19 Tests since being admitted to the international fold, their only draw coming in a rain-hit tie against Zimbabwe two seasons ago.

They have also not won a one-day international in four years and exited the World Cup earlier this year without winning a match.

"Eade pointed out that there is a missing link between the grass-roots and top-level cricket in Bangladesh," said BCB's Mahboob Anam.

"We will work to mend this missing link."

Bangladesh has armed itself with a new coach, Dav Whatmore, famous for guiding Sri Lanka to the 1996 World Cup. He takes over next month and has said he is confident he can turn around Bangladesh's cricketing fortunes -- but has warned fans not to expect a miracle.

I honestly hope they'll do BD the favour to reverse their decision just to make sure a sound basis is laid and structures waterproof to build on for such a STATUS .....

ICC should take this step to stop BD being the laughing stock of International Cricket .......

They helped their own pockets by gambling rather than the Bangladeshi team.

I personally think that stripping a test playing nation is not good for cricket. ICC should divide test playing nations into two groups depending on their ranking and only the top six teams should play together and after an agreed period the worst of the best group should be relegated to the second and the best of the worst group should be promoted to the best group.

Hence there will be good and competitive cricket and cricketers will have enough time to play test matches too.

Playing against BD is a waste of time for most test playing nations. They should have their status suspended until they have improved enough to at least be competitive. Kenya are a better side yet they don't have test status.

Bangladeshis first need to beat Canada and Kenya. Then, the Group of 9 might consider playing a one-day with them, forget test match.

By the way, losty, why are you sopro-Bangladeshi for cricket? Have you seen them bat lately? And as far as Pakistan losing to them in 1999, it happens. As Wasim said after the match he was happy for his brothers (not the Bangladeshi ones ;) ).

X-treme , absolutely true.

Khan Sahib, not just that such countries who fail to perform well and show their credibility but also the ones that are involved in match fixing/gambling, etc, etc...should be stripped of their status ( thats just my opinion and I donot think thats good idea propounded by you).

Funjee, I am not in favor of anyone. I know what Wasim said then. I guess i opened this thread in that light...

Bangladesh? Well, I think they should stop playing Test Cricket for a while and concentrate on getting their team together, sort out some consistancy in their ranks - They need to sort themselves out.

Good Luck, Dav Whatmore. :)

hiring dave whatmore is a first step for bangladesh towards success, he really turned the sri lankan side around.

they need to have a proper domestic circuit, even if that takes place, it will take couple more years to groom the youngsters, so it won't happen in couple months.

Another kick in the butt to Dalmiya.

lol @ helping the ‘brothers’. funguy :k:

lost soul, not many nations play cricket like football and getting rid of a team would play against the cause of cricket and i m not in favour of that hence i proposed an alternative solution.
