Baloch being converted into minority in Balochistan’ ** BNP-M says millions of Afghan refugees registered as locals

  • Demands immediate cancellation of registration

QUETTA: Balochistan National Party-Mengal (BNP-M) Acting President Jahanzaib Jamaldini said the Baloch were being converted into a minority in the province through a conspiracy.

**“Millions of Afghan refugees have been enlisted as locals in the recent house-listing, which was rejected by the BNP-M, and the party will resist the conspiracies against Balochistan,” Jamaldini said while addressing a press conference at the Quetta Press Club on Tuesday.

He said that through a conspiracy Afghan refugees had been settled across Balochistan, and they had obtained NICs and passports without any hurdle. “There are more than four million Afghan refugees and most of them are not registered,” he said, adding that inclusion of Afghan refugees in the recent house-listing should be cancelled.

The BNP-M leader said the population of Pashtun districts had been increased manifold in the recent census as compared to the last census of 1998 to convert the Baloch populations into minority. “The population of Qila Abdullah district, according to the 1998 census, is 370,269, while the new population shows it to be 2,138,997, which shows a 447.7 percent increase,” he said, adding that they rejected the census and demanded immediate cancellation of registration of the Afghan refugees in the province.

Responding to a question regarding the new Pashtun province, Jamaldini said that they had no objection to formation of a Pashtun province consisting of Pashtun districts, however, the demand should be made from Islamabad, not from the Baloch. “Besides formation of new provinces, the areas of Balochistan, including Dera Ghazi Khan and Rajanpur, should be incorporated into the province,” he added.

“The statistic secretary in Islamabad has confessed on record that big irregularities have been made in the recent house-listing in Balochistan,” he said, adding that they had great respect for Afghan refugees but they needed to be repatriated to their country.

To a query, he said that 70 percent Baloch lived in Sindh, 28 percent in Punajb and six percent in Kyber Pakhtunkhwa, but they never demanded that Sindh should be called a Baloch-Sindhi province or Punjab should be called a Baloch-Punjabi province.

“The Baloch are in a state of war. Thousands of people have gone missing and hundreds of bodies have been recovered. In such a situation, demanding a new province is tantamount to rubbing salt on the wounds of the Baloch,” the BNP-M leader remarked.

To another query about the upcoming elections, he said that BNP-M was a democratic party and would adopt all democratic means for the rights of the people of Balochistan.

Earlier, Fouzia Marri, along with her companions, announced to join the BNP-M.**

This is stupid exaggeration, there are total 1.6 million afghan refugees in pakistan and most of them live in KPK. Check out statistics of British times, balochs were already minority in the province. balochistan is misnomer, it is actually a pashtun province.

today pashtuns got a pashtun governor apponited in balochistan saying they have lot of population cause of afghan refugees to be precise pashtun doing politics on afghan refugees in Baluchistan if we baloch dont send the afghan refugees back to Afghanistan day after tommorow god forbid u will say u we have more population then baloch in balochistan so CM will be a pashtun will u tolerate as much baloch refugees in afghanistan as much afghan refugees are in balochistan currently ? the answer is a BIG NO ! so how can we ? so kinldy i request u i beg u take ur afghan refugees back in Afghanistan for god sake dont convert us into a minority in our own province have mercy upon us

According to various sourses on the web,

“Balochistan has a population of around 10 million inhabitants. Overall, the Baloch and Brohi tribes comprise 50% of the province’s population. The rest are mainly Pashtuns, Hazaras and Sindhis. Baloch are concentrated in the sparsely populated north-west, west, east and south; Brohis in the centre of the province, while the Pashtuns are the majority in the north. Quetta, the capital of the province, has a Pashtun majority with Baloch, Hazaras and Punjabiminorities.
Near the Kalat region and other parts of the province there are significant numbers of Brahui speakers. Along the coast various Makrani Balochis predominate. In addition, 769,000 Afghan refugees can be found in the province including Pashtuns, Tajiks, and Hazaras. Many Sindhi farmers have also moved to the more arable lands in the east. There are also a growing number of other(s) ethnic groups consisting of Kurdish, Panjabi, Mohajir and Iranians who have made Balochistan their home in recent decades.”

“Balochistan’s landscape in the 1980s changed markedly as Afghan refugee camps were established throughout the northern parts of the province. In many instances, temporary mud housing eventually became transformed into concrete structures. The refugees also caused the demographic balance to change as ethnic Pashtuns from inside Pakistan came to settle in Balochistan.”

Given the above information I believe that demographics is the issue at the heart of present unrest in Baloch areas of Balochistan. The common people have been told by the tribal chiefs that due to large number of mega projects like Gwadar port, a large body of non Baloch are moving into the area of Balochistan and soon Baloch will be a demographic minority.

It is evident from the census records that Baloch who were once the majority in Balochistan by a long way are now nearly 50% of the total population with a large number of Pashtuns living in the area as well. Other large minority are Sindhis speakers with a small number of Punjabi speakers present as well.

These demographic trends have emerged by design and as mentioned earlier Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, brought more than 5 million Afghan refugees into Pakistan and these people settle all along the Pakistani side of Afghanistan Pakistan border. Many of these Pashun people have settled in Pakistan and in the process changes the demographic landscape of Balochistan.

Baluchistan is a baloch province not pashtun ur minority in Baluchistan and has always been however u want to be in majority by getting pakistani cnic to afghan refugees who must leave Baluchistan now this is a matter of concern for baloch nation they must wake up and raise voice against this conspiracy baloch wont tolerate afghan refugees in Baluchistan anymore creating ethnic unbalance which we will not bear we will resist any move to convert baloch into a minority in balochistan as Baluchistan belongs to baloch not pashtun

First I agree with that Afghans must go back, but do you think Balochs nationalists are undermining their own self-interest by being anti-state (Pakistan)? Because it seems that's whats driving security establishment to help Afghans settle in Baluchistan to change demographics of the area. No?

Whatever pashtuns do in their areas , is no business of balochs. So far pashtuns are neutral in the ongoing insurgency but if balochs become too problematic for pashtuns, then they can join hands with military establishment against traitors.

I thick the biggest traitors threatening survival of state of Pakistan are present in areas like Quetta and FATA.
And what is unfortunate is that most pashtun nationalists refuse to join hands against those traitors.

This huge province of balochistan is a disservice to the name of balochistan because it isn't wholly baloch for the nationalists to argue about it. The main balochi state was the state of kalat and I doubt that Sui was in there let alone quetta.
