What does this Punjabi phrase mean.

Read in a book.. chhat pe bo-kata ki awaz aa rahi thi aur bakre bulane sa mahol tha?

You know those threads coming out of a blanket or some chadder from the sides . The ones that are not together , you take them and curl them with your fingers , so they can stick together .

Bakre/Bikhray = The ones that are separated

Bulana = Curling them together by holding them in your two fingers

I really hope I am making some sense :)

  1. open your mouth wide.
  2. make loud tarzen-like sound.
  3. bring your right hand (left, if you are left-handed) to your mouth to stifle the voice while continuing to make tarzen-like sound.
  4. oscillate (with high frequency) your right hand away and on your month so that the volume of tarzen-like sound increases and decreases in quick succession.
  5. you have successfully bakre-bulliyed

Historically, sounds shepherds used to make to let their goats (bakre bulana) know they are going where they are not supposed to go.

Recently, sounds you make to put your neighbor down whose kite you have successfully defeated in a kite-battle.

Translation 1: Oh girl with almond complexion lets go... The Jutt is coming making those weird sounds.

Translation 2: The Jutt is coming making those weird sounds and requesting someone to come and paint the almonds with him.

Take your pick.

Jutt has been portrayed negatively in both the translations. I doubt it was the actual intention of the poet :chai:

When they say badam rangiye are they talking about the almond skin color (brown) or almond meat color (white)?? I've always been confused about this one.

I think white is blood less and just like that the person has been victim of dracula. so I would go for first one

Badaami rangat is light tan colour. Considered very attractive.

^ Are you talking about an almond in its shell? Cause the color of the shell is usually a light tan color.

Yes, I believe adaami rangat usually refers to the colour of almond shell (creamy beieg) which is otherwise known as sun kissed or olive complexion.

Good question. Now I am also confused if it is the shell colour or the skin colour.
