I went into the Baking-Beginner’s thread and come out after looking at 5-6 pages. OMG! All those girls are professionals. Seriously, look at the cakes & pastries they can make. That thread is so NOT meant for a true beginner like me.
So, say you have to teach me the ABC of baking. I seriously don’t know a thing of it. What ingredients are needed, what types of cakes can be made, the temperatures, the oven, etc. nothing.
Please can some one start from the scratch & explain?
Basic ingredients would be...flour, butter, oil, eggs, sugar, salt, baking powder, baking soda, vanilla extract, milk, water....and then other things, like cocoa powder, chocolate chips, raisin, oats..... Supplies you need include baking pans, mixing bowls, measuring cups, measuring spoons, beater, wax paper..
For a first time cake, some people like to start from box cake mixes and take it from there. You usually just have to add some eggs, milk and oil, beat the mixture, pour into a greased pan and bake for about 30 mins. So its very easy and simple. They come in lots of different flavours. Baking times depend on the size and colour of pan and whatever you are making. Test for doneness by inserting a toothpick into the middle to check if its still wet inside. But baking from scratch isnt difficult. If you want to try a recipe, tell me what you want to make and I'll find you one. Cakes, brownies, cookies, bars, muffins, cupcakes..once you get the hang of it its really not hard at all!
I want to make a chocolate brownie the first time. Is that easy to?
VERY easy. Make sure you use the correct pan size specified in the recipe, and use EXACT measurements. Baking is not the time to guesstimate. The first time I made brownies I used a deep pan, my brownies came out like 5 inches thick lol. And they were extremely dry and cakey on the edges. The next time I made them I used the correct pan size that was specified (much more shallow and longer) - and they were PERFECTLY chewy and chocolatey.
Yeah def. Here's the recipe I use - super simple, super easy.
Ingredients:
1 & 2/3 cups of granulated sugar
3/4 cups (1.5 sticks) of butter or margarine (melted)
2 Tblsp. of water
2 large eggs
2 tsp. vanilla extract
1 & 1/3 cups of all-purpose flour
3/4 cup of baking cocoa (unsweetened)
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
3/4 cup of chopped nuts (can be omitted)
Powdered sugar
1- PREHEAT oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 13 x 9-inch baking pan. (I just use those aluminum foil trays, so easy)
2- Combine sugar, butter and water in large bowl. Stir in the eggs and vanilla extract. Sift together flour, cocoa, baking powder and salt in a medium bowl. Stir into the sugar mixture, and nuts if using. Spread into prepared baking pan.
3 - Bake for 18-25 minutes or until wooden pick inserted in center comes out slightly sticky. Cool completely (!) in pan on wire rack. Sprinkle with powdered sugar.
Some tips:
- When making brownies, never over mix. You're only mixing to combine everything together. If you over-mix you'll incorporate too much air into the mixture and end up with cake-like brownies, rather than fudgy ones.
- Use really good cocoa and vanilla extract, it does make a difference.
- Make sure your eggs are room temperature.
- Make sure butter is not too hot after melting otherwise it'll cook the eggs.
