Baitullah Mehsud demands resignation of NWFP govt in 5 days: threatens consequences

I cannot wait for the government to find this man and put him in his place. The people of thw NWFP chose this government just 6 months ago and he wants to give it orders? What makes him think he is more important thant he people?

Baitullah’s ‘five-day ultimatum’ to NWFP government -DAWN - Top Stories; July 18, 2008

KHAR, July 17: Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan chief Baitullah Mehsud has asked the NWFP government to either resign within five days or “prepare itself to face the consequences”.

“The NWFP government is not sincere about restoring peace, rather it is responsible for lawlessness in the tribal areas, Hangu and Swat,” TTP spokesman Maulvi Umar quoted Baitullah as saying on Thursday.

The TTP spokesman told Dawn that the Taliban reserved the right to take action against the provincial government if it did not resign in five days. He said the NWFP government was a powerless entity and Taliban would not hold talks with a weak government.

Provincial Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain said people had given the government a mandate for five years.

“This is just nonsense and we know from where they are getting dictation,” he said, adding that the statement of Baitullah Mehsud was regrettable.

He said the government would not step down, nor would it follow the dictates of a person or group.

The TTP spokesman said the provincial government had approached the Taliban with an offer to hold talks but it had also launched an operation in Hangu and started killing innocent people.

Meanwhile, the Taliban spokesman in Swat, Haji Muslim Khan, warned that the peace process in the district would collapse if troops were not pulled out.

He told journalists that security forces had arrested 11 Taliban at various checkpoints and demanded their immediate release.

He said the Taliban were not terrorists and they had been waging a struggle for peace.

Time for the govt of Pakistan to put such anti state people in their place. There is no place for a terrorist like him in our country.

Re: Baitullah Mehsud demands resignation of NWFP govt in 5 days: threatens consequenc

One man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter :chai:

Just Killing them … wont change the mentality of people , who religiously follow them …

Re: Baitullah Mehsud demands resignation of NWFP govt in 5 days: threatens consequenc

^^ so you suggest honouring them and ask them to take over the government? he may not be bad personally, but he is certainly not following the rule of law and killed so many innocent people and govt officials. since when kidnapping and killing become noble?

what will happen, he is threatening with some suicide bombings and pretending to be angel

Re: Baitullah Mehsud demands resignation of NWFP govt in 5 days: threatens consequenc

People need to realize that the clergy cannot be govern them, but the problem is, our leadership and dictatorships fail them miserably so they wouldnt understand this.

Re: Baitullah Mehsud demands resignation of NWFP govt in 5 days: threatens consequenc

Baitullah Mehsud has been allowed to operate openly. Instead of the big bad battle against Lal Masjid, if the Govt had taken such "precise" measure to do a raid on Mehsud and kill him instead, it would have looked better.

He's a man with vested interests, thus he is allowed to jib-jab w/out being taken out. It takes a covert operation to take out one man. With him gone, his followers can be brought into the fold of tribal legislation and made to disarm and become a part of the system.

Pity, while the public mourns the deaths of the civilians, the officials are busy conducting meetings of Pakistan's Affairs in other nations. tsk tsk tsk...

He exists and moves freely b/c state allows him to. As I said before ISI and army are in bed with militants & funny thing is that Americans know, yet they're not doing anything about. This all could change if there another 9/11 type terrorist attack in the US...which is very much a possibility.

At the time when action was recommended and the problem still easily fixable, shaukat aziz was busy hitting at Condi and his usual/routine chawwalkhooriz.

Admin could you please allow me to say some dirty words, swear about Baitullah Mehsud?

This man is getting on my nerves and i want to take my anger out so please allow me to say what i want to say.:mad::mad:

Re: Baitullah Mehsud demands resignation of NWFP govt in 5 days: threatens consequenc

Baitullah Mehsud is an ISI asset. The military and the agencies are using him to discredit and destabilize civilian government so that people are forced to "invite" the military to take over again.

The army can take out this thug any time it wants. Yet this man is allowed to conduct press conferences for dozens of journalists, video cameras included - all in the same area that the army claimed to have "cleared" days before.

ISI is once again playing dangerous games. The fools do not understand that by empowering Baitullah and his thugs, they are giving credence to Western critics who see Pakistan as a "rogue" state.

come on he is the pakilion;)..be respectful…

Re: Baitullah Mehsud demands resignation of NWFP govt in 5 days: threatens consequenc

I really hope the govt does not make a deal with him and not reward him with US$millions. He should be sent up with smoke.

Good Analysis. I do want to add that I don't blame the ISI for using Mehsud, because after the November elections, we will see how much the new administration will focus on Afghanistan/Pakistan.

Once the Amrikis are gone, the Taliban will be back in power. This whole mess in Pakhtunkhwa has to end because the battle zone lies west of the Durand where the American KHARzai and his dari speaking, Indian supporting thugs are in power. The faster we can shift this mess, the better of things will be in the future.

Anyone see the Taliban overruning Qandahar? I say as soon the US shifts 'its interests' elsewhere, it will be time for the Taliban to move back into power.

Re: Baitullah Mehsud demands resignation of NWFP govt in 5 days: threatens consequenc

Only problem is that Americans are not going to shift focus AWAY from Afghanistan. They are shifting focus and bringing 10,000 more troops INTO Afghanistan.

This means that if another major attack occurs, Pakistan will be on US and world crosshairs for playing a double game.

We were lucky to escape after 9/11 given the massive amounts of DNA trail connecting our jihadis, ISI and the Taliban/Al Qaeda nexus.

After next attack, no one will feel sorry for us because our Generals refused to learn their lessons.

Our nukes allow us to take pungay with India. It will not protect us if we take on the whole world, especially the Americans.

I believe 11 or 12 of the 14 hijackers were Saudis. I am not disgreeing with you here esp. when you take into account the wider roots of this menace of extremism but the same argument should also apply to Saudi Arabia. While the masterminders (most of them foreigners) seem to be hiding in our tribal areas, the actual operators usu. are Arabs.

It is precisely these "pea brained" policies of Pakisani Military establishment (esp ISI) that has brought Paksitan into this messy situation. They are hoping that once Taliban's are re-established in Afghanistan, then things will be normal in NWFP. Nothing can be far from the truth though.

Having seen the kind of government established by Taliban during the pre 2001 era, everyone in Pakistan should be weary of them. What exactly do they stand for ... the Taliban's? Would you like similar kind of government in Pakistan? trust me if their influence does come to Pakistan, the first thing probably to go off air would be GS!!!!!!

For have no doubt in your mind that once Taliban's are re-established in Afghanistan, then Pakistan would be the next country in their sight. After all why would they not extend the same policies on their " friendly neighbour". so instead of fighting Mehsud in NWFP, he would be "sipping tea" in Karachi!!!!!

So you be carefull in what you wish for ........ American interest in Afghanistan is in Pakistan's interest. Unless you really want Pakistan to be Talibinised.

They will shift their interest. Remember Afghanistan has no oil :D

Bringing more troops in temporarily is not the same thing effective occupation like Iraq. Afghanistan is not important for the US in the long term, strategically. In many ways neither is Pakistan.

Sure the 9-11 connection has brought both Afghanistan and Pakistan into the crosshairs, and I would also be concerned if another 9/11 like attack were to occur, but if we (Pakistan) has no leverage with Taliban we're going to be even more screwed because:

  • If we attack Taliban positions and try a scorched earth policy, they will not be defeated, they will just go underground and cease temporarily.
  • Alienating the Taliban, will give Pakistan no standing in Afghanistan. Only the Taliban, under the spirit of Islamic brotherhood, have tempered the nationalist movements in Pakhtunkhwa, and made the Durand line a peaceful border.

The US WILL turn its back on Pakistan, no matter how much we become their ghulams. So even if you cede FATA to US atatcks (which has been done anyway), they will not be able to control the areas, keep Afghanistan stable. Instead you will see Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi up in flames.

I don't agree with the Taliban but I do see why Pakistani miliyary/intelliegence is doing what they are doing. If Americans attack Pakistan, you can be sure that we are not like Iraq or some random Arab country...expect bodybags after bodybags.

Re: Baitullah Mehsud demands resignation of NWFP govt in 5 days: threatens consequenc

GoldenAsif,

After 9/11, the Saudi Royals got the message and if you have been watching the news you'll find that they have crushed the nascent Al Qaeda movement there. They have also fully cooperated in limiting finances going to jihadi related tanzeems.

On the other hand, our brilliant GHQ and ISI geniuses have not learnt one thing. They thought they can chase away Americans like Russians. Little they realize that what defeated the Russians was not Pakistani muj but unlimited American $$ and the diplomatic and military shield that US gave to us that prevented the Soviets from crossing the border openly.

Trust me American public disagrees on Iraq but they are united on Afghanistan. They will not leave Afghanistan so soon. But I guess we will have to once again learn it the hard way.

I remember Mushahid Hussain saying once about GHQ - "Pungay letein hain, phir maar paRhtee hai aur phone call aata hai aur U-turn kartein hain. Agar U-turn maarna hee hai tu pungay kyoon lein?"

Re: Baitullah Mehsud demands resignation of NWFP govt in 5 days: threatens consequenc

Pakistan has to decide whether FATA etc re part of Pakistan or not. You got taleban running courts and collecting tax in some part, this guy Mehsud pushing the govt in another, some part saying they won't follow Pakistan law and adopting Sharia......what a mess!
